Don't mess with success....changing things mid-season can bring bad ju-ju.....stay with what works....Parnell is working well coming off the bench....Not worried about fans personal bias, all I care about is wins, keeping Romo upright and keep lanes for Murray to run thru. The starting 5 OLmen having been doing awesome....as they are

It appears like the team will put Doug Free back on the field as soon as he's ready, possibly as soon as next Sunday.

But the offense didn't take a step back in Free's absence last week, the unit produced over 400 yards for the fourth straight week.

Jermey Parnell has the physical ability and should only get better by actually playing the game.

Good question. Fred and Martin have both referenced Free as a leader and mentor to them; however, I see Fred and Martin becoming the leaders of that unit with or without Free on the team.

I have no idea what the real dynamic is in the locker room but I had the same reaction - do guys like Fred, Tyron and Martin really need a "leader" around them to perform?

Irregardless, I get the same feeling. Whether Free is around or not the younger guys are going to be leading the pack next season.

xwalker - that was brilliant. Makes me wonder if people like you are paid to perform the same level of detailed analysis of every player on every team. Just great stuff. Thanks.

As for your conclusions regarding the possibility of Free not being pursued while re-signing Parnell... how much value do you place on leadership, team player and RKG attitude?

In my mind, there is one thing that isn't about technique, strength or speed - it's something much more important.... It's called Leadership.

And, based upon everything I've read about Free, he appears to be the Leader of that OLine. Without that leadership, is our OL as good or will another leader emerge?

"Culture wins football. Culture will beat scheme every day." - Who said it?

BTW - it's not Garrett. But, Garrett would have if he had been asked...

Chip Kelly said culture beats scheme

It's a double edged sword. Say for instance, Free doesn't come back till after the bye week and Parnell, in the 4 games he's played has gotten better with experience and the line play is as good or even better, how do you then justify benching a younger, more powerful player with more upside, who's also going to be cheaper to resign in the offseason for Free?

Remember when Wade replaced a well playing Free with Columbo in the Minnesota playoff game? May very well have cost us that game.

The play early in the 3rd quarter is just from a lack of experience, rather fail being conservative and getting rid of the defender on the 1 st level then thinking the 1st level is fine and getting to the 2nd and the 1 st guy makes the play. He did look good in that game probably graded out as well as mote of the lineman for the whole game. I have never had an issue with him as a player just the fact that he was project. If he can maintain a decent grade over the next couple of games I would have no issue goign with him as RT next year and let Free walk.

I would say it's going to come down to Free having to lose the job, not Parnell taking it.

The good thing for Parnell is he is getting the chance to show if he deserves it. Then, when Free steps back in, Dallas will already have full games by Parnell with which to compare Free's performance.

I don't think it's unfair to give the job back to a player who hasn't done anything to lose it, but if he proves to be a chink in the armor, then make that change.

Fair enough.

But consider this: Parnell would most likely be cheaper to resign that Free and is younger and has more upside.

This is also going be his 3rd ever start at tackle in LIFE. That means if he is your future, then the rest of the games this year are also invaluable experience that will make him better next year and he'll be missing out on if you just install Free back.

To me, the ultimate solution would be to just rotate them in and out like we did at the end of 2012. It didn't hurt the line chemistry that much then and I doubt it does now.

Here is my review of Parnell at RT against the Giants.

They ran behind him often and he can really drive the DE out of the area with power. His pass blocking was good enough.

Red - Fail
Gray - Undetermined or could do better.

Great format, detail and analysis. Better than any so TV expert commentator

All things being equal, I prefer that Parnell remain the starter because he is younger than Free and could be a longer-term solution for this line. I don't know if he's necessarily going to come cheaper than Free, because I think someone will offer him a starting job no matter what happens here ... unless he stinks in tonight's game then is replaced by Free in the next game.

I do believe he could end up being better than Free because the only thing Free has going for him in comparison is a better understanding of how to play the position, which allows him to win some technical battles that Parnell doesn't always put himself in position to win. That would probably change with more starting experience.

I don't mind the rotation scenario, but I also don't believe Dallas sees that as ideal. The only reason the Cowboys did it in the first place was because Free was playing so poorly ... which was primarily caused by technical issues that he's mostly cleaned up. (Free isn't a player who can afford technical issues while Parnell has the physicality to better overcome his.)

So, I don't see Parnell remaining the starter or rotating in ... unless Free struggles. Because of that, Dallas probably will re-sign Free and Parnell will head for greener pastures. That's not ideal to me, but it isn't like Free can't play out a four-year contract because that would mean he'd be only 34 his final year and he didn't get much playing time his first few years (this being only his sixth season as a full-time starter).

If Free keeps playing the way that he has last year and this year, we'll probably end up letting the player with the higher ceiling go, but I don't think that necessarily means we'll regret the choice.
