It's about to be Christmas in June for the Dallas Cowboys.

After being in an exceedingly tight salary cap situation this offseason, they're about to get a monumental gift a la the release of quarterback Tony Romo. Originally slated to hit the Cowboys' cap for a massive $24.7M in 2017, the June 1st release of the four-time pro-bowler will instead yield them a savings of $14M -- a massive bump over the $5M savings they would've gained had he been designated a pre-June cut.

They'll split the dead money hit of $19.6M over the next two seasons -- to the tune of $10.7M and $8.9M, respectively.

As it stands, the Cowboys currently have $3,565,774 -- per OverTheCap.com -- with that number ballooning to $17,565,774 effective tomorrow.

The $14M bump will be the largest of any NFL team this June, with the New Orleans Saints gaining just over half that number ($7.8M).

Unless they have something specific they want to use the space for in 2017 (and they probably do ..see Martin) then I could've seen them taking the whole hit this year and going forward completely clean.

Except that the found money is going towards something you already could have afforded, but chose to hold off on.

I kind of like the fact that Dallas will be a contending team and yet not pushed up against the cap. Teams like GB and NE who seem to be able to put good teams on the field and manage their cap at the same time.

That is about all they will do with it.

This year sure. They already had the ability to resign him as it was.

The next couple of years moving forward they are going to be in a position to pick up any FA they target. This past year was one of the worst after the franchise tags. Bohye and Sheard were the best there were. Yuck. Zeitler making Zach Martin money?

Next couple of years look better. For example I doubt the Chargers eat Ingram's --who still has not signed his tender or reported-- franchise tag inflation.

This is possible when you have good young talent who is waiting to be paid. Not a bunch of aging talent who you're mostly paying for what they did.

People still rueing not splurging on Leary? An above average guard who benefited from playing between two All Pros. It's silly.

Not complaining about the relief factor. It will be strange and refreshing to actually not be sitting around having to cook the books to make even the simplest of moves.

But it is not something to celebrate, much less start figuring that the extra space means it will be spent on anything other than securing a player like Martin. Just trying to get ahead of the thought process that I am sure exists that thinks Jerry Jones has this master stroke trade for Sherman or something that is just waiting on the cap space.

Great news for our cap situation but I can't help thinking how much pressure is really on Dak to perform. No safety valve waiting in the wings. All stories I've seen point to him getting Uber prepared so that should bode well. There is a cost for everything and I hope that lack of depth at the QB position doesn't bite us.

But yes, the cap room is nice to have

Yech! Not interested in overpaying for a guy like that anyway. It's obvious he's out for all of the money he can get and wit him his up and down history, looks like a prime candidate to "cash it in" as soon as he cashes in.

I'd keep plugging away in the draft rather than spending in free agency, especially given their recent record for success.

Pay the good players that you have rather than chasing someone another team didn't want enough to keep.

Yeah Martin will not come cheap I still like the fact we can have the pro bowl players locked up and not be in cap hell in the process. I'm not a big fan of high priced FA teams tend to over spend and not get the bang for the buck.
