Yes, the defense is below average, but this team's success or failure depends on how the offense performs, because that's where the talent resides. All 4 losses, the Cowboys have put up 17 or less points.

Probably due to the lack of a pass rush. If they were to play man it would be hard to stay with their man for 4+ seconds. In zone, at least in theory, it should be harder to break free for huge plays.

It is a lot like how we did not run on offense in previous years, due to a lack of trust.

The line is holding the defense back. In a fully functional Marinelli defense, you are supposed to have a strong pass rush.

The zone concepts are supposed to stop the big explosive chunks of yardage through the air and keep things underneath. It is a very conservative approach and it aligns with Marinelli's history. He is not going to suddenly just start incorporating press man concepts on a regular basis. He does not believe in them, nor does he trust his talent who can barely make a QB break a sweat.

Stats aside, it seems simple to explain.

If the offense struggles the defense will get lit up.

If the offense does it's job the defense will be allright.

There's no good reason why the offense shouldn't be good every single week though.

Do you have second half ratings? They seem to have cleaned up a bit during then, although I suspect still better in the latter part of the season.

In the second half it's 94.2 the last 6 games, compared to 87.0 for the year.
