If we get a chance to get a franchise QB we take it. Maybe let him sit behind Romo for a couple years like Aaron Rodgers did. Nobody knows how much longer Romo's got. We have got to be prepared.

Like RGIII? Here's the inconvenient truth -- no one has a clue what makes a franchise QB, not a clue. If they did, Brady would have been drafted before the sixth round, Romo would have been drafted, period (!) and Rodgers would have been walking out of that Green Room about a second after the draft started. So yes, we can try and get a franchise QB. But that means nothing.

It means we have to try. We waited until it was too late after Aikman. Entering the 2000 season, nobody knew it was Aikman's last year. We were caught off guard and you see what happens. Jerry reached when he took Quincy. There are no guarantees but I have seen a lot of good qb's going in the draft the last few years. RG 3 is the exception. I was never sold on him anyway and Washington gave up far too much for him.

What are we going to do? Draft a QB who will have a 4 year contract, and have him sit behind Romo for 3 year presumably, and that QB only has a year to establish himself?

With the way the NFL is today, you simply can't "sit and develop" high draft picks anymore. You just can't. Maybe we draft a franchise QB in Romo's final year of his contract, but in this draft? No. Not going to happen, we have other holes that need immediate attention.

I think the jump to Cassel comes down to one thing.

If Dez is back, Garrett is going to give the ginger a shot with Dez outside. If Dez is not back yet, Cassel gets his shot.

And what if Romo gets hurt next year too? There are no guarantees. He is getting older and he has a bad back. Then we're right back where we are now. I don't even know whats out there but this franchise has got to start thinking of its future. I get some don't what to think about the possibility. I guess we wait until it's too late and then spend the next 10 years trying to find a QB.

So which report are we believing? The one saying it's highly like for Cassell to be the starter... or the one saying the starter will be Weeden unless something radical happens?

A high draft pick isn't going to change the season much. You're better off having a veteran step in for Romo.

We'll draft a QB high, but the 2016 draft isn't the right time.

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones spoke at the Little Rock Touchdown Club on Monday. Some highlights via @LRTouchdownClub and â@chase_shannon :

On possibly changing quarterbacks from Brandon Weeden to Matt Cassel: "Don't be surprised if we think about a quarterback change with Cassel"

On the Cowboys: "I like our football team. Reinforcements are on the way"

On Greg Hardy: We have things in place with the Cowboys to make Greg Hardy a better person and player.

Stephen Jones said his father Jerry wanted him to go to Princeton, where Jason Garrett was the QB -- Stephen wanted to be an Arkansas Razorback. Stephen got his wish and graduated from Arkansas in 1988 with a degree in chemical engineering...

with the giants next game, you don't want to go with a guy who hasn't been here more than a month. weeden gives us the best chance to win, sadly.

Yea I'm sure the Giants are shaking in their boots. At least with Cassel the Giants don't know what they're getting. Of course, neither do we.

  • Weeden had his opportunities to make throws in this game, but he chose not to. When he needed to throw with anticipation – he didn’t. When he needed to show some patience and allow the routes to develop – he didn’t. Weeden didn’t take advantage of the times where he had a clean pocket to take a shot on a quick out or comeback route. The film didn’t show these receivers winning on many of their routes, but the ones where they did, he either didn’t take a chance or was late with the throw or his accuracy was off. Even though the game had been decided – his throw to Terrance Williams on fourth down was inexcusable. Williams probably ran his best route of the year and for him not to be rewarded for it tells you all you need to know about the current quarterback situation.

i agree that weeden is physically incapable. is cassel physically better? how could he not be? but on the other hand, weeden knows the offense, while cassel just got here. i think they are both similar right now because of that.

How much more can this offense be dumbed down? It's not like the full play book is open for Weeden.

Listen more intently upon subject...Weeden does not see play development, or receivers getting open downfield. Marry that with a strict targeting of short yardage up the center and right side of field. Both kill realistic play developments in both the running and passing games.
