His stock is going to plummet quickly after this. If Mayock had him as the #1 43 OLB on his board before this... he won't be now. Atrocious workout. Just awful.

Unless he really lights it up at TCU's pro day, he is going to be available much later than anyone thought before the combine.

I really liked his play in college but the only benefit of having smaller LB's in Marinelli's scheme is that they're fast as hell and cover a lot of ground. It doesn't appear that Dawson fits that description.

How can the scouts sell him to the coaches now? Say, "well, he's small but he's slow".

Not sure how he will do in the NFL, but he will fall pretty far in the draft unless as mentioned his pro day goes a lot better... He needs to test well because he is on the small side

This fall reminds of Burfict a few years ago. Definitely a lot of red flags with this guy now

I think his carefree, unapologetic attitude toward being chronically late to team meetings will be even more damaging to his draft stock than that workout will.

And it wasn't just that he was slow... he was unathletic period.

And this isn't a case of a Jerry Rice or an Emmitt Smith who was simply .10 slower than the typical norm for the position. This guy was at least .30 slower in the forty... and it may be worse than that because he's only 230lbs.

Paul Dawson fires back at combine critics: I'm not a track star

INDIANAPOLIS -- TCU linebacker Paul Dawson arrived at the NFL Scouting Combine looking to prove his athleticism and respond to concerns about his character.

Dawson is NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock's top linebacker in the 2015 NFL Draft and was expected to strengthen his case as a potential first-round pick if he could assure teams that he was not going to be an issue off the field.

Whatever hopes he had of quieting critics in Indianapolis, however, seemed to end by the time he walked off the turf at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Dawson did not fare well when facing questions from the media this week and was widely panned by analysts and scouts for his 4.93-second 40-yard dash time; he was near the bottom of his group in just about every other testing category.

The criticism of his combine showing appeared to ruffle his feathers enough to prompt a response on Twitter a few hours later.

While it's true that nobody thought Dawson was going to run a super fast 40, the slow time will no doubt force many clubs to reevaluate the talented linebacker.

Dawson has plenty of great tape available for scouts to watch, but unless he improves his numbers at TCU's pro day next month, it appears he is leaving the combine with his stock pointed downward.

His workout was along the lines of Brandon Spikes, Vontaze Burfict and ~gasp~ Michael Sam.

You are correct in noting that Dawson's numbers while weighing 230 pounds is even more alarming considering that all of the players above outweighed Dawson by at least 15 pounds.

Risen hit the nail on the head - Dawson's devil may care attitude about showing up to practice and team functions on time is even more alarming, and the workout didn't buy him any benefit of the doubt about his commitment to being the best that he can be. His tape looks a lot better than his workout, but there are warts here to be sure.

I'm a fan of Paul Dawson in games but boy did he mess the bed yesterday. One drill where they were backpedaling he looked like a defensive tackle dropping into coverage.

He needs to get his act together. I still think he can help Dallas but he needs to show something these next few months.

Jesus, how could this guy have come to the combine so unprepared?

4.93 40
28 inch vert
9'1 broad jump
and only 230lbs?

Dallas could probably get this guy in the 4th round.

he bombed, but not 4th round bombed.

Jordan Hicks is a local kid and tremendous athlete but mediocre football player.
Paul Dawson is a tremendous football player but mediocre athlete.

I'd take Dawson for sure.

Michael Sam was a great college player with an awful combine. That means we should be able to get Dawson in the 7th.

I think the way he handle the critics could affect him more than his combine numbers. I'll take him in the second round for sure, but honestly i don't think he falls that far.

I really wanted the Cowboys to use their 7th on Burfict instead of freaking Caleb McSurdy.

Many were surprised by Paul Dawson’s poor forty time but those who saw him at combine training were not. I was told while Dawson is not foot fast but his reaction speed has been off the charts. Dawson was one of the best they’ve seen when participating in reaction drills. The bottom line is while he physically runs a 4.95 forty, mentally he plays at a 4.3 speed.

I ran faster and jumped higher than he did when I was in college but that was 25 years ago. Now when I run it is time by a sun dial and the floor comes with me when I jump.

LOL. Be thankful you can still run.

Dawson has to grow up some, but he's still the best pure lb in the draft. He probably falls now, but seventh round is ridiculous. I see him going not later than the fourth.
