Troy Aikman: My back led to my retirement; Romo's back should concern Cowboys

Then, going into my last year, I was having some back issues," Aikman said. "I took epidural shots, as I understand Tony [Romo] had this week, and the first time I took them was before the Jacksonville game that season in 2000, and I remember on the day of the game, waking up, and I'd never felt better for a game in my life. My back felt pain free for the first time in years. And in the first quarter, we completely turned Tony Brackens loose and he slammed me on the turf right flat on my back, and immediately, my back went into spasms. I was done for the day. So that good feeling lasted about half of a quarter. And I took shots the following week hoping that I could recapture the pain-free symptoms, and it never took again. So, that is why I retired."

It's good it did, cause the another concussion could have done some worse damage...

I think this might be it for Tony, being 34 and have a bad back is just a disaster in waiting

Everything will be fine, Troy was basically in the stone ages as far as medicine goes compared to now. If Peyton can come back after all he went through and throw 88 touchdowns in two years, I'm sure we can get above average production from a much younger Romo.

Troy was also one heroic son of a gun, he was always getting blasted in the pocket because he simply wasn't afraid to stand in there. Tony has avoided a career full of bone-crunching hits.

Time to study contracts for some

Yea.............I have read in several threads now that we have to move on from Romo, we have to draft a new QB, Romo is never going to be the same so we have to face reality, ect..................

Apparently these guys have no concept of Romo's contract. You dont "move on" from a QB that you just gave $108 million dollars with over half of that guaranteed.

I even read in a thread that Romo should be the backup going forward if Orton gets us to the playoffs............LOL............a backup QB with $54 million guaranteed on his contract....................LOL.

That aint how the NFL works. Romo could be missing an arm and with $54 million guaranteed, he is going to be out there running around throwing the ball with his one arm............LOL

I guess this tweet from a few days ago had some truth.

Enty Claus ‏@entylawyer25 Dec
My one sports exclusive of the year. Chace Crawford says Tony Romo has floating fragment near his spine. Risks paralysis by playin.
Tony Romo had surgery like I said he would. Not sure why DFW media decided Jerry Jones had better info than Tony's family.

Anyways, Good luck Kyle!

Dam.....................floating fragment is nothing to mess around with................one big hit and the fragment could pierce the nerve column and sever or "clip" the nerves causing permanent nerve injury and/or paralysis.

No doctor on the planet would have cleared Romo to play if this is what his actual injury was.

garrett homies after 2014, 8-8 season:

"garrett needs another year because this was romo's first year after back surgery, he was still recovering, what did you expect?"

"When dealing with possible spinal cord injuries, it is going to take at least 2 or 3 seasons for Romo to get back to his circa 2009 self, so its not fair to hold Garrett responsible when he doesnt have a 100% healthy Romo"

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The same people who think Tony will ever be his old self again are the same people who think Tony should be mentioned in the same breath as Manning. They are the same folks who thought we would win out with 3 games to go. They are the same people who thought we would win the east easily. Same folks who believe in the process, think JG is a good coach, and will give a pass to the organizational failures this year because our franchise QB got hurt before the last game. They are the same people who buy the JJ kool aid every single season and really expect us to be any better!!!!! If an Ex Cowboy HOF QB who went through similar things in his career can't talk sense into them, nobody can...

Uh...yea. I got a 6 year old girl and a 5 year old son. What did the experience teach me? Being Mr. Mom is a pain!

I take extra extra care of my wife now, lol. No lifting for her...

Ha! I'm glad she's better. I'm sure you were her strength during that time. My back hurt just reading that post from you. :)

I can't think of anyone in real life or in here that thinks Tony should be mentioned in the same breath as Manning.

Not the actual surgeon but a specialist....

“Physical therapy will start within two weeks after surgery and usually full recovery is six-to-eight weeks after the surgery is done," the doctor said. "So for all the cowboys fans that are thinking about next season, he should be pretty fully recovered well before training camp starts."

These next 6 months or so will be interesting to see.... I'm glad that Romo is our QB, but i hope the organization is at least developing a contingency plan in case he is not fully ready to go for the next season and beyond.

Hope Tony can come back 100% in 2014. It was back injuries that ended the careers of Aikman, Jay Novacek, and Charles Haley.

OR he recovers well and comes back strong (with less difficulty throwing the ball) and plays at a high level for the next couple of years. Nobody knows how this will turn out but the odds were much worse for an older Peyton Manning after a couple of neck surgeries, and loss of arm strength. If the surgery was successful, he has a good chance of returning at a pretty high level even if it's not "Romo at his absolute best in his prime".
