One of my favorite sure-fire gifts is a locket that you've personalized for the person. It was about 1993 when color copiers were all the rage when I bought a locket for my mom for Christmas. I borrowed my parents' wedding photos from my aunt in secret and then used a color copier to copy and shrink down a photo of my dad and one of my mom to fit into the locket. Their wedding photos are in black and white, but the color copier could make way better reproductions than an ordinary copier. Then in a subsequent year, I did the same thing for my sister, except I put two photos of her daughter, my niece, into the locket.

Fast forward to today. My niece (the same one as before) is an adult now and is getting married. This time I took digital photos that I had of my niece and her fiancé and sized them down in Gimp and took them to a place to be printed. They're sterling silver lockets, a gold-colored one for her and a sliver-colored one for him. Here are the results. I think she'll like them.

If you can personalize a gift for someone, it usually makes it meaningful to them. I won't be able to go to her wedding at the end of the month. It didn't work out to be off work and travel then, but I'll be there in spirit.

Nice!

I saw one necklace pendant that was a heart with some kind of gem in the middle. But if you put light through it, it can project a picture that you chose.

On a related topic, speaking of digital photos, my wife into taking photos of the kids in the family and printing them on a fairly good quality printer to frame. We have them hanging around the house. But I noticed that some of the pictures have faded severely over time. We can always reprint them, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this and is there a way to keep them from fading? Is there some kind of spray coating for example that is used for photos to keep them from fading?

You could try laminating them with non-glare laminating pouches. There's some chance the laminating could damage the colors from the heat from the laminating machine, but you would know right away. However, it probably won't. There are some printing places that will laminate for you or you could buy a machine. They're pretty small and usually affordable.

I can try it. We have a laminating machine already. If it doesn't work we can always print out the picture again. Thanks for the suggestion.
