Knee surgery will sideline Manning four-to-six weeks

NFL.com Wire Reports

Pro Bowl quarterback Peyton Manning will need four-to-six weeks of recovery time after having a bursa sac removed from his left knee, the team revealed in a press release on Monday.
That timetable means he would miss at least the start of training camp. The Colts open camp on July 25 and break camp on Aug. 15.

Career Statistics:
QB Rating: 94.7
Yards: 41,626
TDs/INTs: 306/153

"The procedure was routine. The Colts' medical staff expects a full and complete return to action," said Colts president Bill Polian.
Manning is one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in the NFL and has started every game in his career. His streak of 160 straight starts at quarterback is the longest active mark in the league, unless Green Bay's Brett Favre returns.
He has won two league MVP awards, a Super Bowl MVP award and is a six-time All-Pro.
Polian said that Manning "had been receiving conservative treatment for an inflamed bursa sac in consultation with the club's medical staff since February, 2008. This course of treatment was productive until Peyton experienced increased pain and early signs of infection."
The Colts' backup is Jim Sorgi, who is going into his fifth season with the franchise.

If there's a QB who doesn't need the reps, it's Payton Manning, he knows that offense inside and out... I'm sure he'll be back ready for the start of the season.

I'm sure he will be back by the start of the season but he could be pretty rusty.

As an athlethic trainer, IMO, it throws up a red-flag, atleast a little. The Bursa Sac lubricates the joint. With the beating players take, it is worth keeping an eye on, it is a long season.

OK. Is it me or does anyone else wonder why these guys wait so long to have surgery if they know they need it? I mean, look at Terry Glenn last year. He waited to long to have his procedure done and it cost the whole year practically.

I know this isn't the same thing, but why wait till you end up missing any camp? Couldn't this have been done a month or so ago or was this something that just happened?

Glenn's situation was different. He was at training camp (the half that was in San Antonio) and practicing when he felt something in his knee pop (ended up being cartilage).

They say the procedure is routine, but I would think the best option is to avoid any surgical procedure if you can. Perhaps that is why they waited. They wanted to give it time and let it heal if at all possible. It appears that approach was working until recently when things got worse.

I recently had an inflamed bursa sac. Hurts like heck. A 10 day treatment of anti-inflammatory pills, antibiotics and rest seemed to solve the problem for the most part. I think eventually I will be getting this procedure done as well, but the first course was to wait and let things heal itself if possible.
