The Washington Commanders signed their first free agent who didn’t play in 2007 with the Washington Commanders. The new player is receiver Jerome Mathis, a three-year member of the Houston Texans who didn’t receive a restricted free agent tender after being arrested for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend in February. The Washington Times points out that the team waited until 7:00 p.m. on Friday to send out a release announcing the move, which apparently was aimed at avoiding unnecessary scrutiny of the decision.

Down more on the wiki article, he owns pit bulls in Virginia (Hampton, which is crazy close to Newport News [Mike Vick]). Something worth investigating there skins. Then again, if he f-s up, there shouldn't be an issue with cutting him.

What's wrong with a special teamer? Are you saying that every person on the roster has to contribute to either offense or defense and anybody who doesn't isn't worth the vet min? IF he makes it, he'll end up as like a 6th receiver and likely never see the field in an offensive formation.

If they got him cheap, then they made a move that can't really hurt them either way. That being said, Goodell should suspend him for hitting his girlfriend and this just makes Commanders fans look like hypocrites as they always continue to forget the fact they signed beauties like Dexter Manley, Michael Westbrook, Darrell Russell, etc.
