It's been in the back of our head all day, and it finally made it down to our fingertips after Adam Schefter mentioned it during ESPN's Outside The Lines.

Where are the Cowboys?

They're uncharacteristically quiet as free agency begins, especially in light of the fact that the year ends with a Super Bowl played in the North Texas Football Cathedral.

A league source explained earlier this week that the Cowboys aren't likely to spend a ton of money, given significant cash commitments already in place for 2010. It seems that the Cowboys were banking on an uncapped year when negotiating other deals, and a lot of the cash comes due this year. (The Commanders applied a similar approach.)

Even though the Cowboys fall within the Final Eight Plan, they still can break the bank for one guy, paying him a first-year salary of $5.8 million or more.

Part of the problem is that there's no player the Cowboys really need who merit that kind of a commitment. With DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer at outside linebacker in the team's 3-4 defense, there was simply no reason to pursue Julius Peppers.

It doesn't mean the Cowboys will do nothing. But they're not behaving like the Yankees, in the same year the Commanders aren't behaving like the Red Sox.

Of course, we fully expect the Bengals to behave like the Pirates.

The funny thing is that even on this board, with the exception of Rolle, no one is really that concerned that we aren't doing anything. That says a lot for where we are as a team. When Jerry doesn't go nuts and this board isn't melting down on the first day of FA, that's something.
