I feel the same way but I haven't heard anything about the Cowboys even talking to him anymore. I would think you'd hear rumblings at least.

They rolled with the Marinelli/Richard defense for years and it was always flawed talent wise.

The Cowboys refuse to use FA in any meaningful way to attack some of their issues. They basically ignore a method to improve their roster and it hurts them over and over.

What's funny about all of this is the amount of faith you guys put in Jerry and Stephen and give them such leeway despite them leading a run of 25 years with only 4 playoff wins. At some point, don't you ask yourselves, "Hmmmmm, why am I trusting them when they tell me this is the right way to do this?" or "Maybe I need to re-evaluate my stance here since Jerry and Stephen keep talking about its the right way?"

Could it have been what Nolan was asking him to do? It seemed like everyone on the D last year struggled, even guys that had played well in the league before. Thing that bothered me the most about Woods last year was it looked like he just gave up on some plays especially when it came to tackling and he was in a contract year.

No they played Marinelli defense then it changed up once Richard took over it was not the same scheme as what Rod put in place. Who said anything about faith in Jerry or Stephen? I put more faith in McCray to go out and find players that is his job after all and according to those who cover the Cowboys will say he is the 2nd most powerful man in Dallas. I also have little choice but to put faith in Quinn to help McCray bring in players whom he feels can fit in to what he wants to do defensively. As for high priced FA? not opposed to it but as I mentioned in my 1st comment to you was "you don't always get what you pay for" which you claimed. When you screw up on high priced FA on 4 to 5 year deals it hurts when it does not pan out.

I hated the Nolan hire but some of the things Woods said/did was ON HIM totally. Not the coach. He could hate Nolan and the scheme all he wanted but you don't throw up your hands/give up and pout. Those type of guys gotta go.

I truly believe this, he had players playing out of their comfort zone. This D will be much improved this year. You have to play to the players strengths.

I mostly agree, the thing I can not get over though is that it was not a isolated player it was most if not all of the D. That unit had a lot of dysfunction going on from looking lost, to the crumbling we heard was happening. The unit was a mess.

As a fan, I would like them to sign both Hooker and Kazee and draft a guy like Grant in the 2nd round for the simple reason that safety is fast becoming for more important than Dallas has traditionally look among the position. Reality says we should sign one of them and maybe draft one on day 3 of the draft. One difference this year is obviously Quinn as the DC but the other difference on the free agent market is that many players that might get more money usually in free agency are taking shorter deals due to the cap this year and the fact that every agent and player knows the cap is going to explode this year.

Looking at Hooker and Kazee, both are the same risk after their type of injury and adding both somewhat protects if one goes down again. Dallas still needs to address a backup QB and CB in free agency IMO and quite possibly DE since Smith isn't being resigned. As to the Defense currently on the roster, this is what we have

DT - Gallimore, Hill, Woods, J. Hamiliton, Palmore, Watkins, Urban - some would like us to sign D. Jones but appears we are done until the draft, don't see Hamilton or Palmore making it out of training camp and if we draft a DT (we should) then Woods could be the odd guy out

DE - Lawrence, Gregory, Alexander, Balsam, Anae, Carter, L. Hamilton, Crawford (probably retires) - just how much Quinn favors Anae and Carter we should see during the draft, wouldn't be surprised to see us still sign a vet FA as a rotation guy i.e. Dunlap, Clowney, Houston, Kerrigan, etc., probably have to be a cheap though knowing Dallas.

LB - Smith, VanderEsch, Bernard, Gifford, Kamara, Neal* - seems thin here unless we resign Lee which I doubt. With the Leo position Quinn uses guess we see a lot of only 2 LB a lot of the time but could see us draft a guy 2nd day or sign a vet to a one year deal like Wright or Ingram if the price is right

CB - Brown, Diggs, Canady, Goodwin, Burton, Rashard Robinson, Reggie Robinson, Lewis - appears Reggie is going to stay at corner and seems like Quinn the fit so see Diggs, Brown, Lewis, Canady and Robinson as fits and then a draft pick (maybe Surtain or Horn) but they like Goodwin for ST so do we keep 7

S - Wilson, Neal, Kearse, Thompson, Parker - best bet is we sign either Kazee or Hooker but would be surprised to see both. Thompson and Parker probably gone at the end of training camp and we should draft one but we all know how that usually works out but hoping they draft one in the 2nd

IMO, we need to come out of the draft with a CB, DT, S in the first three rounds. I could live with the LB especially since Neal will be a hybrid. DE is a question of depth as we still don't know what Anae and Carter can do. If we get Surtain or Horn then we are very set at CB. We need a big body 1 Tech to help stop the run. Then safety is a must with all the one year possible deals. The 1st round is going to be interesting for Dallas as usual.

Oh no doubt, total mess but I do think the players have been a liability (quite a few). Easy for bad players to blame their coach in the Cowboys environment. Everyone just goes to Jerry.

You are here defending their FA strategy. This strategy has been put in place by Jerry and Stephen. They dictate what happens, who they sign in FA. McClay just takes marching orders, he's not developing the strategy.

So when you come to the board and argue that going cheap in FA and building through the draft is the right way to do this, you are putting faith in Jerry and Stephen's blueprint for roster building.

PS - The get what you pay for comment was more geared towards the notion that if you sign a bunch of bargain bin guys thinking that solves your issues, you shouldn't be surprised when year after year after year after year after year those bargain bin guys almost always don't do anything for you.

and I blame Jerry and Stephen for changing the defensive schemes to quickly be it by their own design or that of hiring coaches whom will come in and change schemes. All I can say is I have watched teams like Washington try to buy a team through FA and failed big time and it cost them a lot to fail. There is not perfect way of doing things. I know fans think they know everything of how to build a team even thought they never have an never will and do not have to concern yourself with being wrong. I have always said Jerry choose to take on the role of GM so all blame that comes with the job is his. If you ask me about FA I will continue to say FA is a good way of filling gaps but it is the draft where I build my team. Shopping FA market comes with it's own risk.

But that's kind of a strawman as I (and many others) have never said anything about "building" through FA. Or that the draft shouldn't be the primary source of roster building.

But this franchise has for years now continued to spend very little in FA thinking they'll either get lucky (which they haven't) and that the draft will fill all their holes (it hasn't). Maybe it's time to change how they do things? No, don't get dumb and stupid in FA and start restructuring contracts and start chasing after all the high priced guys. But maybe, target that one guy who might cost a little bit but you know gives you a better shot at filling a clear hole than a draft pick or a pool of JAGs and trash bin leftovers?

Its not that so many are giving Jerry and Stephen a pass. Its just that there is no scenerio where they aren't making these decisions. We know they suck so we have to focus on the problems that can be fixed.

It's interesting not sure if it means anything or not, but seeing no buzz on the twitter account of the writers that cover the Lions in relationship to Kazee.
