*RUMOR, Speculation, toss and see what sticks, etc*

Posted by Mike Florio on June 21, 2009, 3:10 p.m.
As we prepare to join the NBC family, we’re making a conscious effort to get back to our roots.

Sure, we spend a lot of time commenting on news either broken by others or announced by the teams or the league. But we built our following primarily because we can get stuff that others don’t have — and because we can (and will) post rumors, without adhering to the two-source nonsense that paralyzes the flow of information about sports.

We caught wind this morning of a tip from a very unusual source. A member of the military — an officer serving in Afghanistan — contacted us with two eyebrow-raising-nuggets that had made their way to him on the other side of the globe, from credible sources.

We pondered using it even without corroboration under the thinking that, if a guy in harm’s way would get a thrill by fooling us into using a Bradshaw-Is-Dead-style rumor, then we’d be glad to give him that thrill in exchange for the sacrifices he’s making for the rest of us.

Because, however, we’ll soon be working with a legitimate media organization (or, as the case may be, undermining its legitimacy), we decided to poke around a bit.

After hitting a dead end, we got in touch with a source who would know the truth. The source explained that no information could be given, adding “I will not deny it either, I will leave it at that.”

So with that extended preface (you can wake up now, by the way), let’s get to the meat.

The rumor that the source would neither confirm nor deny is that the Vikings already have signed Brett Favre, and that the team and Favre are waiting to release the news.

If accurate, this means that the Vikings have a signed contract that they have yet to submit to the league office. Setting aside for now the question of whether league rules permit such tactics, it puts into perspective recent developments such as Favre’s use of “we” when discussing the matter with Artie Lange’s ******, the visit by a Vikings trainer to Favre to check on his arm, and reports that coach Brad Childress wanted to see Favre participate in some of the offseason workouts.

These details all make much more sense if Favre already is a member of the team.

The other bit of information, which we also posed to the source who declined to confirm or deny the rumor, is that the Vikings already have green-lighted the production by Reebok of purple jerseys bearing the number 4 — and the five-letter name that isn’t pronounced like it’s spelled.

None of this news should be regarded as earth shattering, but it’s the clearest sign yet that, come early 2010, Favre will be conducting his third annual retirement press conference.

When he comes back and he flat out sucks. I'd imagine he'll hang them up for good at that point. As long as he's mediocre though, he's comin back.

I really don't even care anymore, he's gone a long way to ruining his once sterling legacy in my opinion.

I kinda worry for Brett Favre. Football is obviously such a big part of his life and he's trying to hang on at all costs. Typical narcissistic personality trait. It wouldn't surprise me if he goes into a deep depression after he finally hangs it up.

He might get back on pain meds.

I'm the only person in this forum who is happy about this. I like the guy and enjoy watching him play.

I like when he plays against us. Never could get the crown part of the stadium in check. That might be new this year if we play. The crown might be gone.

count me in, I hope he plays until he is unable to, and I hope that is well into his 40s.

I really like him, and I like his honesty, and he loves the game, hard for me not to respect a guy like that.

If I'm a viking fan I'm not too happy about it. I'd rather roll with Tavaris. I think Favre would be the ideal backup qb but I highly doubt he'd accept that role. It's funny because it's a role that would likely extend his career another few seasons.

I have no idea on what bizzarro world favre isn't head and shoulders better than tavaris, but it sure as heck aint earth.

Jackson is trash, ask any vikings fan.

And Favre is still better than half the starters in the league.

For me....it's not about liking the guy or enjoying watching him play. It's about a player leaving the sport about as ungracefully as one can....

lol I see theres no love for Tavaris. I've always felt the same way about Favre maybe thats clouding my judgement but to me he makes just as many bonehead plays to go along with his highlights. As long as he's not playing for the cowboys I could really care less but as a viking fan I think it would be like having a former Commander great hanging on to glory too long, only to come to the boys. I would just pass.

I tend to cringe at the thought of Romo being another 'Favre' too. I'd like him to settle down and just be Tony Romo which I believe can be much better than Favre. We'll see I guess.

Good thing I'm not a viking fan!

Favre is a media ***** and this is the type of thing that feeds his addiction.
