Among the reasons why Mike Shanahan no longer works as head coach of the Denver Broncos was a big disagreement over the team’s practice facility, according to the Denver Post.
Post columnist Woody Paige, who’s normally known for cracking [Editor’s note: lame and unfunny] jokes on ESPN’s various programs, put on his reporter’s hat [Editor’s note: and hopefully his pants] and spoke to a pair of sources close to Bowlen, who revealed that the owner refused to grant Shanahan’s request to build a brand-new headquarters.
When Shanahan asked Bowlen to build a new practice facility to replace one named after the owner’s dead father in 1990 that was revamped in 2004 and 2005, it represented a watershed moment in their relationship.
“Pat said no,” the source told Paige. “Mike had gone too far. It was the only time Pat didn’t say yes.”
Another source chimed in: “That was the beginning of the end of their professional relationship.”
Of course, the lack of playoff success, declining win-loss records, and questionable personnel decisions all contributed heavily to the departure of the “Mastermind,” ushering in the hiring of new coach Josh McDaniels.
