A league source confirms for us that the Jacksonville Jaguars will be releasing on Monday veteran running back Fred Taylor .

We chased this one after receiving a tip via e-mail from a reader who said our friends at 1010XL in Jacksonville are reporting that the team will announce the move later today at a press conference.

Taylor, a first-round pick of the Jags in 1998, was due to receive a base salary of $5 million in 2009, and $6 million in 2010.

Taylor has rushed for 11,271 yards on 264 2,428 carries, good for an average of 4.6 yards.

He instantly becomes an unrestricted free agent, and he can sign with any team.

UPDATE: Per Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union, the Jags made the move in order to get younger at the tailback position. The announcement will come at a 1:30 p.m. EST press event.

I think he will catch on with some other team if he doesn't decide to retire. I think the guy still has a year left in him, not as a starter but he can still be effective in a limited role.

I've always liked Fred Taylor when he was healthy. Buffalo ought to sign him in case Lynch gets a League imposed vacation.

The giants let droughns go, so maybe they have interest in another veteran who knows some of the coaching staff.

That was my first thought as well. I've always liked Taylor. Always thought he was a very under-rated back and as you can tell by his numbers he's quietly put together a very nice career.

Definitely one of the most underrated RBs ever. The guy has done nothing but produce throughout his career. Not an elite back but always near the top every season. He's had 7 seasons of over 1200 yards but his only Pro-Bowl appearance was in 2007. He missed almost all of 2001 but came back with over 1300 yards in 2002. He also has a career average of 4.6 yards per carry which is outstanding for a guy with that many touches!

Whoever signs him will get a very good player.

I've always liked him too...a very solid, maybe great pro ,and a borderline (but maybe not quite) HOF career.

As for Buffalo, I was thinking they had an excellent backup already....but I guess they would still need depth if Lynch was out.
