Jerryspeak translation:

We're not about to give away a franchise quarterback.

Besides, there's zero reason to make any sort of a definitive statement on the situation until that time comes, just like there wasn't any reason to do it regarding who was starting until that time came.

My Speculation... -This is one way for Jerry to not look bad if Romo goes to another team next year. It will be on record that Jerry didn't want to let him go, but given that if Romo is offered a chance to start somewhere next year and wants to play - Romo can go and Jerry wont be the one that was the cause of Romo's departure.

Typical Jerruh speak that you can't make heads or tails out of. I think he's doing what is expected and letting the league know Dallas doesn't want to let go of Romo. "He ain't gonna be cheap"......

Dak is the starting quarterback.

That doesn't mean he is no matter what. That doesn't mean forever. That means that, even though Romo is healthy, Dak is still the starting quarterback because they're playing well, winning games, and he's progressing nicely.

However, no guarantees of anything have been made to anyone beyond that.

I promise you Jerry and the coaches think exactly like that.

What is he supposed to say? "Yeah his butt is gone next year" I don't think so

He's just trying not to rock the boat too much
You have to recognize the audience you're speaking to:facepalm:
Unbelievable. No Nuance. No critical thought. The superficiality is mind blowing.

Well it doesn't make a lot of sense that you have no plans to not have him and say that you think he could play another 5 years and win a Superbowl. You're not planning on him starting in Dallas in 3 or 4 years.

Such weird comments come from this guy sometimes.
I think you have to read between the lines. Jerry has a major asset that he will probably auction off next season. Romo will be gone and Jerry is going to let everyone know that Romo has plenty left in the tank so he can maximize on the return.

I've a feeling they're going to allow Romo to compete for the job during the offseason.

I have the same feeling, and what Romo said does not contradict this.

The only good reason to trade Romo is IF it is the only way to bring an edge rusher.

If it is an open competition in camp, there is a good chance for Romo to accept winner becomes starter and loser is the backup.

Salary cap is apparently not an issue, and Jerry has never been the type to be cheap to the key performers.

QBs do get hurt...

There will be no competition for QB next year and you can take that to the bank. The future is now, it's working to damn near perfection and that will not be disrupted. Book it.

Jerry probably would like to keep Romo, but Romo isn't going to want to be a backup in what could be the last year of his career and if Dak starts the rest of this year and makes a good run in the playoffs an open competition won't be that open. Even the risk of being a backup for whatever reason is going to lead Romo to desire a trade if it comes to that. I think it would make Jerry look like an incredible jerk to not allow Tony to shop himself around and force him to take a chance of sitting on the bench if it comes to that. Just like Peyton wanted out when he saw Luck coming up behind him, Romo is going to want out when he see's Dak already here. The only way Romo is here next year is if Dak messes up this year.

I'm sure Jerry would love to keep Tony. Heck, if not for the money he probably would. He had little choice but say what he said. Lots of things could happen. But come this off season unless Dak has a career ending injury Jerry will be listening to offers. And just like his statement today the cap and respect for Tony will give him no other choice

that is my guess.
we have more than enough of cap space, even with romo.
the only reason to trade him is that is the only to get the edge rusher.
QBs get hurt.
winner becomes starter may well keep the competitor in romo at peace with himself.
even if dak is backup for a year or two, it would not kill him imo

how can a competitor walk away from fair competition?
that goes for romo and dak
by the time the competition is over, it is beginning of the season.

If Dak competes for a SB, Romo will be on the block. If Dak flops in the playoffs, there will be a competition in the offseason. Jerry is hedging for once.
