PFT: Mike Nolan permitted to wear suit on the sidelines

NOLAN WILL WEAR A SUIT​

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that the NFL has given 49ers coach Mike Nolan permission to wear a suit on the sidelines. Nolan is expected to don a coat and tie (and, presumably, pants) for the team's November 19 home game against the Seahawks.​

But the permission is limited. Nolan reportedly may wear a suit for only two games this season.​

"There's a strong chance he'll be wearing a suit for this game," a source close to Nolan said on Tuesday. "But at the end of the day, they still want to sell hats and shirts instead of blazers." Nolan said in 2005 that he prefers to dress like the coaches of yesteryear, including his father Dick Nolan, who wore business attire while taking care of their business.​

We understand that Reebok wants its logo to be ubiquitous (thanks, Tiki) on game day. But, really, who in the audience will decide to buy Reebok apparel based on the fact that a middle-aged man is wearing a polo shirt with the Reebok wavy lines thingee on the sleeve?​

And what's worse for the overall image of the NFL? A coach in his Sunday best that doesn't double as a billboard for Reebook, or a coach in his Sunday worst, like Bill Belichick and his sweat jersey with the sleeves partially cut off and the red replay flag stuffed in his sock?​

Hey, we got no problem with Belichick's choice of attire. But if he's allowed to hobo it up, Nolan should be allowed to spruce it up.​

I still think the NFL is missing a huge opportunity. They should cut a deal with a suit maker. I'm sure there are other coaches that would like to wear suits but aren't allowed. I'd rather see Parcells in that than some of the stuff he wears now.

I saw a few minutes of that Pats game and Coach Mumbles (nod to Latuna) was wearing that shirt.

I thought man alive the guy looks like a bum, surely he could have found a newer sweat shirt.

Than I started to think. I have to wonder if this is one of those oddball coach/athlete type of superstitions.

Remember Bill saying he got sick because he refused to take the jacket off because they were doing so well?

You here stories of some players wearing the same raggy old t-shirt under their uniforms.

I have to wonder if this is one of those things with Mumbles.

I know he normally used to wear a baggy sweatshirt, sometimes with hood, but have not caught many pats games for some time.

If the Cowboys win Parcells could wear a tutu for all I care. I hate it when people say Belichick was the reason Parcells won in the past. I hate the constant fawning over Belichick and the Patsies by the media and all the dynasty talk. I hate that they've won five. But who gives a crap what Belichick wears? He has been getting the job done.

DEL RIO TO GET DRESSED UP, TOO

As Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio embarks on a seven-game stretch that might force him to wear a suit for a job interview, he'll be breaking in the dress duds during Monday night's home game against the Giants.

The AP reports that Del Rio will join Mike Nolan of the 49ers as the first head coaches to wear a coat and a tie since the league mandated that the field chiefs don clothing provided by the league's official apparel sponsor.

The only open question, as we see it? Whether tailors will be able to fashion for the fireplug-shaped former linebacker a shirt with a 25-inch neck . . . and 25-inch sleeves.

I applaud the NFL for this and agree with a previous poster, get an endorsement for the coaches.

If the NFL is so hard-up about coaches wearing Reebok apparrel they just need to have Reebok make some suits. Nothing too over the top, maybe just the Reebok logo by the breast pocket or something.

The NFL has completely sold out to making money (thanks Tags ) and the product on the field has suffered because of it. They are more interested in what their corporate sponsors want than the fans. The NFL existed long before corporate sponsors did but cannot exist without the fans. Someday it will get so bad that the fans will leave and the league will find out the hard way that it sold its "soul".

I like it. Maybe I'm old school, but you look at the old photos of the HCs wearing suits and fedoras on the sidelines and they looked classy.

Landry was always one of the sharpest dressed HCs in the league. His hat and sport coat were always coordinated to the "T." It was no accident with Landry. He took a lot of pride in how he looked as the team's authority figure on the field.

As for the current gear HCs wear, I think they all ought to wear those polyester, coaching short-shorts like Coaches and P.E. Teachers used to wear back in the 70's and 80's. Those were the worst looking things imaginable!

I agree with this reversal of field. You ask these guys to be pros. To conduct themselves accordingly and then you turn around and say that a mature grown man representing a big time industry like the NFL has to dress like he's headed to the gym for a pick up game in front of millions? Seriously, I'd fire the marketing idiot who decided this was a good way to go.

i agree that they can go overboard with the logos and sponsors. but the lure of the almighty dollar has proved to be very tempting for the league. i doubt the fans will abandon their teams for being too liberal with their sponsors. i would hate to have out players look like NASCAR drivers though. one thing is for sure, as long as the league is succesfull, the sponsor dollars will pour in. the minute the league goes on a crissis, all the support will dwindle accordingly.

If I were Reebok, I would make a special suit for Nolan. Then they could get even more promotion. Hey, we don't really make suits, but we do care about our clients.

Don't some of the uniforms in NFLE have two or three sponsors on them? A test run maybe?
