Amid rumors he’ll retire, quarterback Kyle Orton has yet to show up for offseason workouts in Dallas. As Stephen Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas/Ft. Worth, the Cowboys expect him to eventually arrive. And for good reason. More accurately, for a good three million reasons. Orton’s five-year deal, signed in 2012, contained…http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=profootballtalk.nbcsports.com&blog=&post=2257094&subd=nbcprofootballtalk&ref=&feed=1

The Cowboys obviously want Orton to come back because he's significantly better than Weeden or Hanie. Ideally he'll never have to take a meaningful snap, so who cares if he's here or not, but at the same time we want to be able to remain competitive if our QB misses time for any reason.

I would've loved to have Orton when Romo broke his collarbone, for example.

But if a guy doesn't want to play........

Orton wants to be released so he can retire. But he surely doesn't want to return the $3 million, so I expect he'll show up when he has to.

Do we want a backup who'd rather not be in the NFL anymore?

The only thing I'm hoping is for the Kyle "Show Me The Money!/See Ya!" Orton nonsense to somehow overtake the Tony "Humongously Fat/Jinx The Black Cat" Romo nonsense. Then we can all talk about a whole lot of nothing for reelz. haha.

Really?

My impression about Orton in Denver and Chicago was the longer he played..

the more the other team drilled him.

He failed pretty well with both teams and left.

I don't want him playing prolonged for my team.

Just my impression..nothing personal.

It's a negative six million dollar plus swing for Orton to retire right now and not play this season, so we'll be seeing him in a Cowboys uniform unless he has some sort of a health problem or Jerry trades him, IMO.

The veteran backup qb coming in for workouts in april is pretty far down on the list of things people should be worried about.

I feel that they brought in Weeden and Hanie to almost force Orton's hand...assuming that he shows up for mandatory camp, he isn't going to get as many snaps in TC...he may get bored and thus retire on his own...but, that money.....at my own work, if I knew I was getting a bonus in the next month, but I potentially had a job offer somewhere else, I would do whatever I could to NOT give up that bonus if it was going to be big enough....Orton doesn't want to NOT keep his bonus money...in his case, he has to pay that back if he retires or he keeps it if they cut him? see you for mandatory camp Kyle

Anything is possible regarding Orton's future but all we now know is that Orton's agent is saying he's going to remain with the team. We also have seen evidence that the Cowboys are apparently determined to make Orton honor his contract. I don't think he'll be inclined to forfeit the money he's under contract to make by retiring this year, although it looks like he will next year for sure. As I understand it, he'd also have to forfeit a considerable amound of money if he opted to leave. I think he'll be back.

You know... something that's going unvoiced in all of this... I am soooo tired of players thumbing there noses at the cowboys and fans. He has got his money and he will do the absolute minimum to keep making more. Remind you of any others recently??? (cough:rat:cough). Yes, I know these workouts are voluntary but if you're serious about helping your team get over the hump and take a step towards the superbowl, then you come here and workout and help everyone get on the same page and understand the system. Suh is getting ripped for not being at VOTA's, why does Orton get a flyer when Romo, who is recovering from back surgery, is here?? Just another example of a player taking Jerry's money and saying screw you very much!

Why wouldn't he want to play? He's only 31, and being a backup QB is an easy paycheck.

Hah...if I'm Kyle Orton and you're using those guys to force my hand I'm staying at the house until mandatory workouts for my bonus. No threat.

You know..

Orton is fading in my opinion.

frankly, I could care less whether he stays or goes.

If Romo manages to come back and play 3/4 of the games..

..I think Weeden and the other QB can backup at much less dollars.

Although it seems most want to talk about cap hits and salary cap blah..blah..

irrelevant.

Either this guy wants to play and drills down and plays for us..

or we need to move on.

Orton is better than the other two, but at this stage, I don't believe he is THAT much better than Weeden...and my point was that he is going to start to realize that the team is moving on...they may have already moved on...other than the obvious money issue (having to give the bonus money back if he retires), I wouldn't want to be around if the team is sending those types of signals....Weeden? I can see that move...but brining in the other guy is sending a message to me...if Orton thinks he is vastly superior to those guys so much that he can NOPT show up for team activities, then I think he is in for a rude awakening

Keeping Orton would be a huge mistake, I don't care how bad he wants to play:
1. he had his chance and he ABSOLUTELY BLEW IT (not the first time in his career either)
2. too much money for an average backup without any upside
3. did I mention there is no upside? The guy isn't getting any better folks. If Tony goes down Orton isn't going to lead this team on some magical run unless its to the draft with a top 10 pick next year. Hell, we were 8-8 with a good QB in Romo.
4. we can draft a guy in a late round (or even bring in an UDFA if that is what it takes, I'm not even an Ohio State fan and I would take that Guiton guy over Orton). pay him less money to sit behind Romo and potentially strike gold.

while I'm on it we should give wheeden the boot ASAP as well before he contaminates the whoever else we bring in. If Cleveland thinks a guy is the future at QB he should be avoided like the plague. I don't care how good he was throwing the ball up to justin blackmon at oklahoma state. A thirtysomething year old who has had 0 nfl success and minimal experience can be someone else's trainwreck.

sorry about the rant folks but I badly want this team to succeed.
