STRAHAN CONTEMPLATING A HOLDOUT

A league source tells us that Giants defensive end Michael Strahan is seriously considering refusing to report to training camp. In fact, we're hearing indications that the decision not to show up already has been made.

The move, if it happens, would not surprise anyone who has been paying attention to Strahan's situation. Earlier this year, there were strong rumors that he wanted more money, and that he might take a stand to get it. Though the talk died down, Strahan has said within the past month or so that he still is the "best at what I do."

So if he's the best, and the guy who is at least second best (in Strahan's mind) is getting paid $12 million per year, Strahan surely isn't happy about getting only $4 million.

Especially since he's trying to replenish the nest egg after his ex-wife ended up with most of his life savings.

So if Strahan stays away, the Giants can thank the Colts, since it was the six-year, $72 million deal given last Friday to defensive end Dwight Freeney that apparently has pushed Strahan over the top.

OSI HOLDING OUT, TOO?

We haven't heard whether or not Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora is thinking about away from training camp, but the fact that Umenyiora not long ago hired agent Tony Agnone (who also represents Strahan) is at a minimum evidence that the teammates are of like mind.

In Umenyiora's case, a holdout would be stunning. He signed a new contract little more than eighteen months ago.

Still, it could be that Agnone believes that he has a better chance of getting money for either of them by keeping both of them away from camp.

Sounds to me like the agent wants to get paid :D

Wouldn't surprise me. And they would have a ton of leverage together rather than seperate.

Sounds to me like Strahan needs more money after his wife took all of his money and ran.

Let him hold out, the guy is old and battled injuries most of last year. He should take his 4 million and run. Maybe get his teeth fixed and make money on endorsements in New York.

osi just signed a contract 18 months ago? if he does choose to hold out, forget him. the skins let sean gilbert sit at home for a year when he held out.

that said, i hope they both hold out :D

I agree with a skins fan. Life never ceases to amaze!

Anyhow, I think it should be illegal for players to hold out. They signed a legally binding contract. They should be 100% liable for completion of that contract if they are physically able. They should be responsiblefor the value of the contract if they do not complete it. If you are set to get paid $4M that season and you hold out. You should have to pay the team $4M.

I dont really blame anyone for wanting more money. They can only *lay so long, they are freaks athletically, they can do what none of us can.

I just think some guys arent being realistic. Like Strahan would be to hold out.

But if in a year or so Demarcus Ware holds out, he might be justified

In Ware's case he got good money at the ninth pick, I would expect him to play out his deal. If a 3rd or 4th round guy came in and played to the caliber of a 1st round pick I would expect him to get a better deal early on - or restructure, that would be fair IMO.

The injury risk is just too great and their contracts are not guaranteed, as long as they are not being unreasonable in their demands, I don't have a problem with some of them.

What is unreasonable?

Asking for a new contract when you just resigned one like T.O. did at Philly and what Osi may be doing.

Asking for LT money like LJ is doing when the team does not have to do anything.

I think Ware was selected 11th, I get what your saying though, but if he turns into what we think he could ask for more.

Romo might even have a case.

I'd love to start the season with both of them in a protracted holdout.

The teams can cut them at any time and won't owe them money on the remainder of their contracts. They also signed a legally binding contract.

I don't like it when a player holds out. If they think they deserve more money then they should have had the forethought to ask for more money before they signed their contract or sign for fewer seasons.

There's gonna be a lot of this around the league with the way the cap went up and salaries exploded... Those guys who signed deals just before are going to feel shortchanged. I look for several of those Eagles who signed long-term deals, like the corners and Shawn Andrews, to pull this soon.

And BTW, Ellis' agent was on the radio last night, and he said Greg was through talking about his deal and was NOT going to hold out.

All depends on contract status.

If his contract has expired or soon will expire, then I say go for it.

But if a guy under contract is justified in holding out for more money after a good season, shouldn't the team be justified in holding a player's paycheck until he agrees to a reduced salary after a subpar season ..........?

Michael Strahan will be 36 in November!!!

Is he crazy or just strapped for cash after his divorce?
For extra cash, maybe he can sell videos of his sister in law he (reportedly) shot surreptitiously in her bedroom.
