PRO BOWL MOVES TO MAINLAND, FOR NOW
Posted by Mike Florio on December 31, 2008, 12:56 a.m.
The NFL announced on Tuesday that the 2010 Pro Bowl will move from Hawaii to Miami, at the site of Super Bowl XLIV.
The annual all-star game will be played at Dolphin Stadium, a week before the league’s championship game.
But, for now, the move isn’t permanent.
“We are looking at alternatives to strengthen the Pro Bowl,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “We will continue to work with the players to make it a great event and will evaluate this concept after the 2010 Pro Bowl.”
“Moving the Pro Bowl to the Sunday prior to the Super Bowl can add even more excitement to Super Bowl week, one of the most anticipated weeks of the year,” said Frank Supovitz, NFL senior vice president of events. “Taking the Pro Bowl to new locations can showcase our top players to more fans around the country. We are also in discussions with key leaders in Hawaii to continue our partnership with the State of Hawaii, which has embraced the Pro Bowl for 30 years.”
We continue to believe that the move has been influenced in part by the league’s desire to flex some muscle in advance of upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations with the union. If the players want to preserve the annual Hawaiian vacation for the best of the best of them, they all might have to give up something else at the bargaining table.
Since news of the relocation first broke on Monday, the union has said nothing about the situation.
