Former NFL head coach Dan Reeves is already making his presence felt with the Dallas Cowboys even though he has yet to officially be announced as a consultant, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Sources told Star-Telegram beat writer Clarence Hill that Reeves, who was described as an “overseer” for embattled coach Wade Phillips, was at the Cowboys’ Valley Ranch facility Monday and already has an office.

He has moved into defensive line coach Todd Grantham’s office. And Grantham has reportedly shifted into fired defensive coordinator Brian Stewart’s former office.

Of course, the Cowboys could use a shot in the arm and some stronger leadership after last season’s disappointing finish and locker room turmoil. Perhaps Reeves is the answer.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys reportedly don’t plan to go all-out to try to re-sign their own free agents and will allow defensive end Chris Canty and linebacker Kevin Burnett to test the market before deciding whether to match any offers.

The Cowboys are concentrating their efforts primarily on attempting to sign star outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware to a major contract extension.

Well that is interesting.

So, maybe, Grantham = DC?

Makes sense.

I don't know how many DCs out there would want to come to Dallas for one year under an apparent lame duck coach. Grantham has DC experience.

Is Grantham a good canidate for the DC spot? I'm not sure, and actually I'll admit that I'm not sure, I know enough about him to know whether that is a good move or not.

The Canty and Burnett moves don't surprise me, really. I figured they'd see what they'd be offered and if they're not getting a lot of bites from the market then Jerry can use that as leverage to sign them to much more cap friendly deals.

Hmm.. It appears that way unless they have a *bigger* office that isn't being used. :laugh2:

But not very good. He was average in Houston and awful in Cleveland. Thankfully, I believe we can count on it being a soft title and Phillips will continue to do what he did last year.

If this is the case, that then leads us to whether or not there will be a backfill of Grantham's old D-line coach position.

I am not a big fan of coordinators doubling as position coaches. I believe the line made solid progress under Grantham's watch last year as opposed to how they functioned under Kasey Rodgers, so I hope we replace him if he's elevated to a higher position.

Give 'em hell Dan.

So the players have Calvin Hill. The Coaches have Dan Reeves.

Hopefully that translates into something meaningful when it matters most.

This is just my tea reading but I think Reeves is here to provide Wade an offensive mind he trusts.

Last year Wade's Dad was telling him to call more sweeps and other assorted offensive advice. That stuff actually worked. I'd say that is a pretty big indictment against Garrett that almost never gets mentioned.

If I were Wade I'd be somewhat troubled by how much fire I took when the offense fell 10 slots to 13th and the defense he was hired to run actually rose 1 spot to 8th.

I'd tell Jerry, hey this coordinator you provided me is not my choice as OC, Dan Reeves is.

People keep looking at this is a "check" for Wade but believe me Wade and Reeves are guys who really like one another. I think is Wade's check for Jason Garrett.

All the talk of how Jerry is going cheap now in the bad economy and whatnot but he is gonna pay Reeves to "consult"? I think that is a direct result of figuring he was gonna have Reeves as his OC when Garrett took a head coaching gig and Wade wanting that badly.

.

That's what I'm thinking. Phillips is the real DC for the rest of the time he's here.

Good call. I think you're on to something! Maybe Reeves will provide JG with some "consultation" on how to call/manage a game and assist him with his growth into possibly our next HC if that's what JJ is hell-bent on doing...

I'm in 100% agreement with you. The money we have invested in offensive coaches is staggering.

Like I said, I think this is the first year you see us let decent free-agents walk in a long time.

We haven't been good again until recently and we've overpaid just about everyone that had even the smallest hint of talent so now we gotta start making some hard choices like every other talented team out there.

we stopped calling those outside running plays when we lost kosier. No one else could pull and make those blocks, so the backside blocking might have been an issue.

I agree we needed to run more without question, the only team that ran less than us was philly.

But I think some of it needs to be kept in perspective.

Paging Dan Reeves

Reeves
We're still waiting for an official press release from the Dallas Cowboys, but we've confirmed that former NFL head coach Dan Reeves has begun his work as a consultant for the club. The organization has been in lockdown mode for the past three weeks.

According to a source, an internal e-mail was sent out reminding employees that they are not to talk to reporters unless it is cleared through director of public relations Rich Dalrymple. In the past, Cowboys head coaches have visited with the local media during the Senior Bowl, but Wade Phillips told reporters in Mobile that Dalrymple had instructed him not to speak.

Moments ago, I called Reeves' new extension at Valley Ranch. Apparently he's moved into former defensive coordinator Brian Stewart's office because that's whose voice I heard on the message. Reeves will report directly to owner Jerry Jones, according to ESPN's Ed Werder.

And for those of you with short memories, Reeves was replaced by Phillips as head coach in both Denver (1992) and Atlanta (2003). Phillips was the interim coach for the Falcons when Reeves asked to be released with a 3-10 record. I'm sure Phillips is thrilled to have a former head coach with a lot more skins on the wall strolling around the complex.

Which team does this organization remind you of right now? Do the Oakland Raiders ring a bell?

An old Cowboy rides into town

February 4, 2009 9:59 AM

According to several local reports, former Cowboys player and assistant coach Dan Reeves has begun his new job at Valley Ranch. ESPN's Chris Mortensen had already reported that Reeves would become a consultant with the team, but we're still waiting on a job description.

Longtime Beast contributor Ed Werder emerged from his Far North Dallas compound to report that employees at the club's facilities have no clue what Reeves is up to. Ed also indicated that Reeves will report directly to owner Jerry Jones, which should do wonders for head coach Wade Phillips' "credibility."

I'm about to give Reeves a call to welcome him back to the area. I'll let you know how things go. After an embarrassing season in which locker room turmoil took center stage, it's obvious that Reeves is being brought in to restore some sense of dignity to the organization. Right now, I think it's fair to say the Dallas Cowboys are the laughingstock of the NFL. We'll see if Reeves can do anything about that.

Ouch!

Can't say I disagree much, this is turning into a mess. We've now got 4 head coaches. Wade, Garrett, Reeves and Jerry Jones.
