McNABB, REID GET TOGETHER

Sal Paolantonio of ESPN reported on Tuesday night that Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and coach Andy Reid had an extended "heart-to-heart" discussion on Tuesday regarding the team's decision to select quarterback Kevin Kolb in the second round of the 2007 draft, and what the move means.

It was the first time they had talked since Reid left McNabb a voice message on Saturday telling the veteran quarterback "not to worry."

Apparently, McNabb wasn't worried -- he was pissed off.

Paolantonio says that the specific content of the discussion is unknown, but that it was described as "frank and open" by someone who was not in the room for the meeting.

Reid is expected to speak to the media on May 12. McNabb could talk to reporters then, or he might choose to wait until training camp.

Now, for our take on this whole ordeal.

Can someone tell us when Donovan McNabb became the coach, G.M., president, or owner of this team? Because we missed the news release.

Why does McNabb have this organization clutched by the short and curlies? The mere fact that the organization feels compelled to walk on eggshells around him makes us think that the time has come for a change.

And why should McNabb get a double-extra helping of deference from the team, the media, or anyone? Because of the Super Bowls he has won? Because of the MVP awards on his mantle?

In our view, McNabb is a good quarterback with periodic flashes of greatnesses but who has yet to deliver when it counts the most, and whose body gives out on him too frequently for him to be the long-term solution for a team that is securing its young talent well into the next decade.

The fans simply want a winning team, and an NFL championship would be nice. McNabb is becoming too much of a distraction, both due to his quiet-but-obvious selfishness and his proneness to injury.

Think about the comments that periodically come from his parents. Surely, McNabb has the ability to get them to put a sock in it, if he so chooses. By not telling them to mind their business, McNabb is creating the impression that they are his messengers as to subjects on which he's not ready to get his hands dirty.

The mere fact that the team drafted Kolb tells us that the organization has at least had the internal conversation as to whether McNabb is the long-term solution. The manner in which McNabb reacts to this latest development could go a long way toward helping the powers-that-be make their decision.

PFT does make a point here.

They keep drafting guys at positions they already have good players, like running back, safety, defensive tackle and no one complains.

The eagles have the best team in the east, but if it were to get ugly again, espn would be so far up their butt its not funny.

How funny would it be to see mcnabb and reid now go at it with sal pal there covering it everyday.

If I were Reid I would have drafted a QB also. Many reason why as I shall list them.

  1. McNabb has been in the league for eight season, yet only has played 16 games in a season three times.
  2. McNabb becomes a head case if he isn't the "HBIC" (yes the B fits)
  3. If McNabb gets rattled in a game, he has no game.
  4. With McNabb, injuries arn't a possiblity. They are the standard.
  5. You never know what you're going to get from him season to season except controversy.
  6. He is a whinny drama queen enough said.

This is just one more example of what an insecure, selfish, whiny-butt,
mama's boy McNabb is. He is a baby by grown mens standards.

He doesn't want to share the limelight with any other player, nor face any competition at his position. He feared Garcia's success.

I'm not defending Owens' actions while in Philly, but we can now see what kind of personality he was dealing with during that whole fiasco.

I'm glad McNabb is being revealed with each new experience.

QBs who have big contracts have already been dubbed "The face of the team" They are expected to be the team's leader, carry themselves with class, be accountable for overrall team performance, Donovan has every right to know and express opinion on overall team direction just like Brett Favre, Tom Brady and Payton Manning, you want an example of a guy who doesn't get it, try Mike Vick--he thinks he's along for the ride with no reponsibility for the extras.

Donovan's long term contract makes him an essential part of the organization. He deserved a Duane Bowe or Robert Meachum to throw to not Kolb on the bench.

He's a douchebag...as much as I hate the Eagles I must admit to having alot of respect for Reid and the organization. McNabb is such a selfish guy, but he is also insecure. Obviously he is going to be the QB next year, so why beef about this.

For once, Florio is making a good point. If everyone in Philadelphia is so worried about McNabb's fragile ego, how can they ever worry about doing the things they need to win? McNabb is an average quarterback, who is losing the mobility that made him a good quarterback.

Philly is trying to groom someone has is successor. It's part of the game. He needs to get over it. Or rather, for our sake, I hope that it's a year-long distraction. :D

That is why I said selecting Quinn would have been prudent. I am pleased that by not selecting Quinn we got great value, but if we had not gotten a kings ransom for the #22 pick I would have made him a Cowboy.

I'll be completely honest. The more I look at it, the more I think that the Eagles probably did a good thing in drafting Kolb.

McNabb is the reason they didn't resign Garcia. Garcia said he was utterly shocked that they didn't even make an offer in attempts to keep him.

McNabb is a cancer. I think Reid knows this.

McNabb is weak. I am glad that he is the Eagles QB. I don't ever see him winning a super bowl.

I understand that, but I dont remember joe montana crying or his parents crying when they brought in steve young and steve bono.

The organization have to keep drafting good players, at all positions every year. Its a talent acquisition league. If you have the chance you have to do it, at all times.

Seriously though, in the same offense, favre and montana had terrific backups and they never complained.

Ever heard the phrase it's a QB's league. Indianapolis recognizes it. Two good tight ends and 2 great WRs but they add Gonzales for Peyton this year anyway.

Philly must live or die with Donovan. They already made that decision when the signed him long term. Andy is the one not one the same page with their cheap front office. They ran off Garcia and now they'll run off McNabb. Good news for the Cowboys IMO.

You don't remember Joe Montana crying---how fast they forget, he was the worlds bigest crybaby when Young was brought in and created a classeless scene when they dumped him to K.C.

He could'nt keep his mouth shut.Saint Brett does it a little differently stretching out his retirement musings 3 straight off-seasons.

Good point

Back in the day - and Reid knows this because he is a friend of Steve Young - Montana made Young's life miserable as he waited his turn. There was no camouflaging the situation.

Young has been very gracious in recent years about the whole thing. On the day in 2005 he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame - the day before McNabb's Super Bowl - Young talked to a group of writers about how he and Montana were "hyper-competitive guys," and how the relationship was "as good as it could have been."

But it wasn't good. In the San Francisco Chronicle, he was quoted as saying, "I was kind of a bulldog on the pant leg of life in that situation. I wanted to play [but] I was nothing but respectful . . . I think the situation was, we butted up against each other, there was no space . . . I thought [Joe] should have done more [to help], but the truth was that I should have done more."

Now, remember Favre, another quarterback with whom Reid has a bit of familiarity. The famous quote after the Packers drafted Aaron Rodgers in 2005 came from an ESPN interview in which Favre said he wasn't being paid to coach and that it's not in his contract to teach. Pretty clear, that.

Even here, when Randall Cunningham took over from Ron Jaworski, there was a level of tension - which is saying something, given how good a teammate and how good a guy Jaworski was (and is). But it was there, just beneath the surface. Jaworski did the right things and said the right things, but something was always there. Jaworski would say things like, "I think Randall can succeed given a limited game plan," and it was true, but also had just that bit of an edge. Given a limited game plan.

(And we won't even get into how Cunningham, as he was being ushered off the stage a decade later, became an unrelenting distraction for everybody - or have you forgotten when he wore his warmup jacket inside-out on the sideline, hiding the team logo?)

Now, this is different. McNabb is too classy to do anything but be classy as this thing plays out. Just don't expect him to be anything more than civil. It really doesn't work that way.

I would add even in Dallas Troy and Steve Walsh situation was not great and the following season Walsh was traded

True.

I forget who the player was that threaten to beat up Steve Young, after he replaced Joe Montana :p: .

Honestly I dont remember him crying about it. If he did, then I am flat out wrong. I remember him becoming injury prone and not being able to shake that. Then the leonard marshall hit in the championship game sealed his fate there. I dont think he took a snap again until the last game of the year in 92, unless I am forgetting.

But yea I dont remember montana being negative in the media, attacking bill walsh or george siefert. I also remember montana winning over and over and over. Mcnabb has not done this yet either but when camp opens and kolb is slinging it around and the fairweather fans start calling kolbs name then we will find out.

Favre wasnt planning on retiring when brunnell or brooks were his backups. I dont remember him giving holmgren or wolf a hard time when they drafted qbs.

I'm not so sure. The Eagles front office has done a pretty good job with talent acquision and managing its cap. They have exercised good financial self restraint in the free agency market, for the most part. That kinda "bites" viewing it as a Cowboys fan.

I think getting another QB that can play was a very prudent move on Philly's behalf. Even if Tony Romo proves to be the best Cowboys QB of all time, wouldn't you want another Tony Romo right behind him?

I don't know about you guys, but I don't want a QB with a fragile ego playing for me. I think the Eagles organization should buy McNabb a "binkie", get him a baby size thermal blanket, wipe a little butt paste on him for his chaffing and put a new diaper on him for all this whining.

Do you think Troy Aikman, Brett Favre, Jon Elway, Terry Bradshaw, et. al. would have cared who was on the bench behind them? No. They would have said beat me out if you can. If you can beat me out, the job is yours schoolboy.

Elway wasn't happy with the draft of Maddox. A QB is going to want someone to help him win. The team has to think differently.
