Free agent cornerback Brandon Boykin has been on three different teams in the last 11 months and has been unable to find a home despite interest from a few different teams.

Carolina signed Boykin in March only to turn around and release him in May. Boykin has been a solid player during four seasons with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. So why can’t he find a job?

According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, apotentially career-threatening hip injury could be the issue at hand. In a chat where he answered questions from readers, Bouchette wrote he’d heard Boykin had a hip problems that “might end his career.”

Boykin played in all 16 games for the Steelers last season, making one start with 25 tackles, an interception, forced fumble, sack and five passes defended.

After being released by Carolina, Boykin had visits with the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons. Neither team has elected to sign him and he remains a free agent.

I hesitated to take this on, because it's effectively third-hand information, but we've all been looking to understand why the Falcons passed on Brandon Boykin, and this might help to explain it.

Carnell Lake On Brandon Boykin: He Had A Degenerative Hip Condition - Steelers Depot
I know the Brandon Boykin uh, saga, has been at times, a tiresome one, but this is some actual useful information today. The Pittsburgh Steelers are holdin

As a former Steeler and current Steelers defensive backs coach, Carnell Lake would presumably be in a position to know that Brandon Boyking is dealing with a hip injury, but as you're reading this article, you'll note this information was filtered through a couple of different sources. That gives me some considerable pause, but you'll note that Vaughn McClure's piece after the Falcons passed on Boykin mentioned a rumor about the hip, as well, and there's not many other good reasons to pass on a young, talented cornerback with a legitimate history of production.

If the hip is this major of a concern, Boykin could well end up without a home throughout the year, which is a depressing thought. It would, of course, give some context to Atlanta's decision.

Degenerative hip condition, and this is an educated guess but a reasonably good one, likely points to ischemic necrosis of the hip. And the fact teams are bypassing him makes me wonder if it is severe enough to actually warrant everyone walking away.

This is the same problem as Leary has but in the hip it is often worse.

Again this is an educated guess and not confirmed.

Considering Boykin's history, it's a dead certainty that the Cowboys' medical staff will examine him thoroughly before any commitment is made. While the Cowboys team is obviously interested enough to take a good look at him, the fact that several other teams have passed on him lately seems fairly foreboding. I'd venture to say "kicking the tires" would likely be an apt description of what is about to come regarding that visit.

Stuff like this makes it pretty clear the gulf of information re: what fans are privy to, what teams are privy to, and what's really going on. In most cases, fans go off of whether or not they've heard of a player and how old he is. That he could have a career ending hip failure doesn't really enter into it. It's crazy how much *****ing (or hoping) we do given how little we really know about what's going on.

Not to be negative here but if our medical staff hives the Cowboys the ok to sign this guy I'll even be more worried about Jaylon Smith

Well, actually, I fail to see much of a connection between the two, since one is a nerve injury that might heal in time and the other a hip injury that now appears to be a chronically repeating issue. Having said as much, in the end, I guess it remains to be seen what eventually becomes of both.

They need to see any operative report, scans and xrays, and hopefully there is a video of an arthroscopy.

Yes ur right Bullflop my view point is all hypothetical if 4 teams gave up on him medically and ours ( again hypothetically) says its ok to sign him are our medical experts that much more advance than other team Dr.

If it's for the vet minimum does it really matter?

yet ignorance of a situation seldom stops critical conversation of it. ;)

If there's any truth to it, I think that would put Boykin in a post-Week One signing if at all.

Shame on Carnell Lake and the media for making this public. Boykin's medical issues/condition is not anyone's business other than his.

I've been thinking about this one a bit. I'm not sure that's the case. I'd agree to the notion in general, but when the guy's taking guaranteed money by (presumably) hiding a medical condition from teams who are giving him guaranteed contracts, that's not cool.

If teams, as a measure of their own process for signing a guy, require a physical to deem fitness to play, how is he hiding it? I would point to a team not being thorough enough in their process to clear a player.

Either way, publicly disclosing private medical information about a player without their consent is far less cool.
