Dallas coach Wade Phillips says the officiating crew that worked the Cowboys' game in Green Bay on Sunday made some errors that turned out to be costly in his team's loss to the Packers.

Phillips says the officials failed to see it -- and then failed to review it -- when Packers punt returner Tramon Williams stepped out of bounds with 42 seconds left in the first half. According to Phillips, that gave the Packers a free seven yards to help set up their field goal as time expired in the first half.

"It was a seven-yard difference, and the guy ended up kicking a 52-yard field goal," Phillips said, per Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com. "So things like that happened to us and we've got to find out why."

That wasn't the only mistake made by referee Jeff Triplette and his crew. Phillips also complained about a ruling on a fumble by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo: Phillips thought it was Cowboys running back Felix Jones who recovered the ball, but the officials on the field ruled that the Packers recovered. Phillips threw his red challenge flag and Triplette at first started to review the play, but then he remembered that the recovery was not a reviewable play.

Triplette acknowledged afterward that he screwed up on the question of whether he was permitted to review the play at all.

"My mistake," Triplette said. "That's not a reviewable aspect of a play. A recovery of a loose ball in the field of play is not reviewable by rule, so we just couldn't review it."

And that wasn't Triplette's only mistake regarding a replay challenge. While watching the game I tweeted that Triplette is a horrible ref, and wondered how he keeps his job when he doesn't even know basic instant replay procedures, regarding both that play and a challenge from Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

In the fourth quarter, McCarthy threw a challenge flag even though the Packers were out of challenges, and Triplette delayed the game while he dealt with the challenge that McCarthy couldn't make. By rule, McCarthy should have been penalized for throwing the red flag when he didn't have a challenge, but Triplette didn't call the penalty.

Said Phillips of those issues, and an illegal block that Phillips said was enforced from the wrong spot on the field, "Things like that, we go to the league on those things and find out why."

Goodell needs to fix the ref problem.

Quit screwing around with playing games in London, and use some of Bud Adams' quarter-of-a-million-dollar fine to hire some decent refs.

What they need to do is get rid of incompetent officials... but they don't.

Players and coaches lose their jobs when the mistakes pile up.

It should be the same with refs.

now what you got to say about triplette and his refs woodysgirl?

dont forget the helmet to helmet hit on tony romo either that wasnt called, but when one of our defenders hits a player in the helmet we are called, why?

again this is the same person that blinded an nfl player in the eye, do you remember him doing that?

and best i remember in a game a few years back his crew blew 9 calls in one game, 9 calls

and yet he is paid over 95,000 a year for this poor officiating

thats isnt just human error either, its incompetence

i know the players didnt execute; thats a given, but poor officiating and your content with that? with how much they are paid to know the rules;

The thing is that until refs starting getting fined, or lose games to ref, where they're losing some of the money they make, which ain't much, you're not going to see this change.

I'll give you some human error in this stuff. You have to cause it's going to happen. But it just seems like, around the league (and in college as well) that refs are getting worse and worse and worse all the time.

They need to do something about the system. Even if it's hiring full time refs, giving them a living doing it, to where you can fine them for making really piss poor calls so that they pay more attention.

That said there is no team who can really blame a loss entirely on the refs. If you do your job through the game then a handful of bad calls really shouldn't be able to decide the outcome of your games.

That would be great. It was just a bad day all around. Breaks just weren't going our way. The Felix Jones non recovery had easily the biggest impact on the game. Now, odds are we recover the ball and end up punting it back to them in decent field position, but that pushed it to 3 scores and huge momentum. Hope the football gods are good to us this week!

Pretty sure he is.

...or do you actually take this little blurb to mean that Phillips is blaming the game on the refs and that he believes his team to be absent of fault?

That's about it. Maybe Roger "godfather" Godell needs to take a public flogging and pay a $250,000.00 fine every time his officials screw up. Maybe then something will be done to improve the officiating. :p:

:muttley:

He did the fist pump after Green Bay missed the field goal early in the game. That's Wade's favorite moment in a game.

After every game, officials are evaluated. They get downgraded, occasionally fined, become ineligible for playoff games, and some lose their jobs.

It's just not reported unless it was some Hochuli-type level or where it appeared in the playoffs.

Triplette's been an official for many years, so I doubt he gets fired. However, if he appears in the playoffs, I'll be shocked.

Rozelle didn't and you had mistakes back then as well. I hate they made mistakes I do know that the refs are graded by the league and yes you can lose your job. I know some want full time refs and with that will come a stronger union for the refs and it will be even harder to hand down punishment for poor officiating that it is now.

The eagles last week complained and got an Im sorry from the official. Next week we get a ref that tries to screw us at every corner. Maybe we get favorable officiating this week.

Calling me out? lol

Refs miss calls all the time. I didn't like it, but in the end, these things usually even out.

again this is the same person that blinded an nfl player in the eye, do you remember him doing that?
He didn't blind him. He accidentally threw the flag into the eye of an OL. The guy reacted by pushing Triplette and getting fined because he's not supposed to touch the refs. The guy was concerned because his dad had glaucoma and he thought the that his vision would be loss as a result. It wasn't and he's since back in the league.

The league has also changed the way throw flags. Generally, they're supposed to throw them up in the air...and NOT in any particular direction.

i know the players didnt execute; thats a given, but poor officiating and your content with that? with how much they are paid to know the rules;
Let's not get ridiculous here. Who said I was content? I absolutely HATE bad calls...when they go against the 'boys. If they go FOR the 'boys, then I'm all for it.

I'm just saying, it's so easy to sit on the sidelines and judge the accuracy of officials, but most of you all have no idea what all a ref has to see or pay attention on any given play. I acknowledge that I don't know what all their looking at, so I'm not gonna rag on them too much about it. In the end, the officials calls are still subject to human error.

The league have rules in place to manage officials and new officials are coming into the league every year. The problem you'll see is new officials will make even more mistakes than a veteran like Triplette because the speed of the game will overwhelm them just like any other rookie player.
