TUNA CALLS IT QUITS

At a time when it was looking like Cowboys coach Bill Parcells would be back for the 2007 season, and possibly beyond, the Tuna has called it quits after four years with the team.

"I am retiring from coaching football," Parcells said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. "I want to thank Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones for their tremendous support over the last four years. Also, the players, my coaching staff and others in the support group who have done so much to help. Dallas is a great city and the Cowboys are an integral part of it. I am hopeful that they are able to go forward from here."

The move came at a time when some players had become convinced that Parcells was done. However, we'd heard that Parcells' agent, Jimmy Sexton, was putting the finishing touches on a contract extension as recently as Thursday, and ESPN's Chris Mortensen kinda-sorta confirmed this by reporting on Sunday that, if Parcells comes back, it will be for more than the one year that was remaining on his deal.

NFLN's Adam Schefter reported on Saturday night that Parcells would indeed return. Since we have no reason to doubt the accuracy of Schefter's report (and we're not being sarcastic, despite our propensity in this regard), we can only assume that there was some last minute snag or epiphany or change of heart that prompted Parcells to walk away.

Maybe it had something to do with a certain receiver whom Parcells most certainly wanted out of town.

League and media sources tell us that the early scuttlebutt regarding a replacement is focused on Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and Patriots coach Bill Belichick. We wouldn't be surprised in the least to learn that owner Jerry Jones is making a run at Belichick.

We also wouldn't be surprised to learn that he will make a run at USC coach Pete Carroll or former Steelers coach Bill Cowher.

As one media source explained: "Jones needs a name. He needs it for his ego. Parcells just left him at the altar. He needs it for that new stadium. Jones also must interview a qualified minority candidate or risk retribution from [NFL Commissioner Roger] Goodell."

The hottest remaining minority candidate is Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, who by league rules won't be available for an interview until after the Super Bowl.

But don't rule out Rivera's current boss, Lovie Smith. Smith has one year left on his contract and he arguably has built up enough juice to force his way out of the last year of his deal, if he makes an impassioned plea to head back to his home state of Texas. The Cowboys would surely have to cough up some draft picks as compensation, but we think Jones would be willing to do it if it meant getting the guy he wants.

Take it for what it is worth. But I freaking love some of the names they are coming up with.

Short of Patriots coach Bill Belichick, there is not a coach worth giving up draft picks for.

That's plain dumb. Why do we need a "name" coach for the new stadium? It's already being built. It will be built even if we hired Daffy Duck as our next HC.

Exactly.

I would shoot myself if JJ gave up picks for Lovie Smith.

BB is an entirely different coach. That - I could live with.

Belichick's contract extended through 2006

NFL.com wire reports

FOXBORO, Mass. (July 23, 2003) -- The New England Patriots extended the contract of coach Bill Belichick for two years, taking him through the 2006 season.
Belichick, 51, is entering the fourth year of his original five-year deal in which he led the Patriots to the Super Bowl championship in his second season. Club owner Robert Kraft announced the extension before the Patriots first practice of training camp.
Details of the extension were not announced.
Belichick, the head coach of Cleveland from 1991-1995, took over in New England in 2000, when the Patriots went 5-11. The next season they beat the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl, but dropped to 9-7 in 2002, and missed the playoffs.
Belichick succeeded Pete Carroll as Patriots coach.

Please not BB. I know he's a "genius" and everything, but I hate his attitude. Thats the first time I've heard his name so I'm hoping it was a mistake. He isn't under contract?

I have to agree w/ that, although I do think Belichick is a total A-Hole as a person. He's the only proven winner in the lot...

Going from Parcell's press conferences to Belichek's would be culture shock for the Dallas reporters.

Attitude is irrelevant.

Why give up draft choices when you can get a great coach without giving them up? DUMB! The draft is the lifeblood of any team. Without it, you wither and die.

I think the point is that you can squeeze a ton more money out of fans, endorsers, etc. the excitement generated by a new stadium and a team coached by Mr. I know his name rather than Mr. Retread.

Yeah he might end up being the DCoord for the 9ers. He's going by the alias of "Dave Campo" these days.

Extension through 2006. I don't know if he ever signed another after that.

He won with the team that Parcells built. Slowly that is eroding.

Not going to happen, but wouldn't it be just like him to take the job just to spite Parcells...

Winning with Bill's players would be the ultimate kick to the groinal region...

I was thinking the same.

Hell, if Bill and Jerry did have some sort of falling out.....
