Matt Ryan’s draft stock just went up a little bit.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Ravens quarterback Steve McNair has informed the team that he will retire. He told coach John Harbaugh and G.M. Ozzie Newsome of his decision last night.

The Ravens have since issued a release announcing the move, and scheduling a press conference for 1:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday.

The move leaves the Ravens with Kyle Boller and Troy Smith as the top two guys on the depth chart.

And while it’s good that the Ravens knew about McNair’s plans before the draft, it would have been better for the team to keep things quiet until after the draft, so that other teams wouldn’t suspect that the Ravens are hot for any of the quarterback prospects.

Unless that’s what the Ravens want teams to think.

I loved his toughness and leadership when he was with the Titans. Injuries took their toll on him. I always liked him.

They better go after Ryan now.

Boeller isn't a starter. And no way is Troy Smith a stater.

I've been expecting them to trade up to get him for a couple of months now. I read yesterday that Carolina wants him really bad. Might be a bidding war to get up into the top 5 and get him.

This absolutely ups the need for a QB for the Ravens. They needed on anyway but now they REALLY have to get one.

..developments like this could help us on Draft Day.

The QB's projected to be available in the last third of the 1st rd. are going to be hot commodities...

..just like last year when Brady dropped to us and we capitalized.

And I wouldn't blink about bringing McNair in as a backup and letting Brad Johnson go.

But I also wouldn't blink to see us go after a QB ourselves in the 2nd or 3rd rd. if we had the additional picks to grab one via some trade that would let us consider it.

I just think we are inviting disaster without a QB that could play for us if Romo goes out. Season would immediately be over if it happened and all we had was Brad J. at QB.

We've got to correct that before the season starts either in this draft or via trade or signing a FA that gets cut or picking up a guy like McNair who could fill in for a short time if needed.

While we all know that the Ravens have been anything at the QB position since.... dare I say it..... Trent Dilfer..... I dont know if I blame these kids that are trying to be starters for that team. Billick was a horrible coach. Moss made him look like an offensive guru in Minny.

Exposed... he was.... in Baltimore.

One other QB to keep in mind is Brohm.

Maybe the Ravens will look to take him end of Round 1? We could end up with a nice deal.

Is there a rookie QB that can come in and win games if Romo gets hurt? Doubtful especially later in the draft where Dallas is likely to draft a QB if they do at all.

If there is a QB who is cut I doubt they are any better than Johnson. Probably would keep Dallas in the same situation except Brad knows the offense.

McNair is retiring for a reason. I doubt he would want to come back immediately to be a back up, so I don't see him as an option.

Now trading for a back up QB is an interesting idea, but who is available and worthy of such a trade.

There just are not too many quality QBs out there that Dallas can get and meet the criteria of being able to win games if Romo gets injured. Brad Johnson is not a great option, but he is probably as good as available. The key is to develop a young guy to be the back up for years to come. Maybe Bartel is that guy, but I think Dallas will try and find someone to fill that role.

Makes our game with them that much easier.

Either a rookie qb or Troy Smith will be playing by then.

Find it incredible to believe that anyone thinks we can draft a QB in 2nd round who could contribute much to this team in his first 2 years. Don't know if you forget the failure rate for QBs is the worst at any position in the NFL. You also forget there is a dearth of good starting QBs in the NFL. With that the case, all backups want their chance at starting which won't happen with the 28 year old Romo who has years (thank God) to win lots of games & SBs for us. If we draft an early round QB, he could be pretty good in 2-3 years but then he leaves cause he wants to start somewhere. Now we could get a good pick for him but then we back in same mess of no quality backup to Romo. Best think we can do is use a 5th or later pick (or sign an undrafted QB) who we can keep around & develop as a backup. But let's not assume lighniting is going to strike twice & give us another Romo.

Also he was a No. 1 pick that was able to sit and learn the game, before he was thrown to the wolves.
