DUNGY OUT, CALDWELL IN

Posted by Mike Florio on January 16, 2008, 2:09 p.m.

A league source tells us that Colts coach Tony Dungy will step down, and that assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell will take the reins.

More to come.

There was a lot of speculation about that happening...

Dungy had previously said he only wanted to coach until he is 50 and he's now 51...

Class act and good luck to him if it's true. I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in 5 years though...

I figured this would happen. Before he got the Tampa job I wanted Dungy in Dallas. I have always admired the man and always will. Class personified IMO.

Yes, there was already talk up in Indy that Dungy had wanted retire at end of last season after they won the SB. Understand his wife and family down in Tampa where their high school age son is attending school. Given the tragic death of his son about 2 years ago, I can certainly understand Dungy's desire to be with his family. Did hear Caldwell was of interest to some other teams so he's no longer an option for any other team (read the Ravens and Falcons).

The league is losing a great personality.
Yes, this is a loss for the league for sure. How can you not love Dungy?

I hope Caldwell continues the Colts' success. He seems like a great guy, too.

Tony Dungy to me epitomizes class. I actually consider him the classiest man in the NFL....

I personally do not like dungy, I find him extremely annoying but he is a good coach and the colts will miss him.

Surprised they are not talking with Cowher. His stock must be at an all time high right now and there is some great jobs available.

He said definitively that he will NOT coach in 2008.

Yeah something about wanting to coach 25 years and he is at 27?

All around good guy. I always liked him... never thought he could win it all... then he did... so I was glad... I didnt like that Gruden stepped in and won it all. But he got his.

I dont think he ever really got a break to mourn the death of his son. I am sure he will have alot of famliy time.... and reflection on that tragedy.

Jim Caldwell, an NFL head coach.

For anyone who lives in or near Winston-Salem, NC that will be truly shocking news.

26-63 at Wake Forest and drove the program into total oblivion. If Caldwell can get a gig like that I suppose current Wake coach Jim Grobe should be President of the United States in 8 years.

CALDWELL WITHDRAWS FROM RAVENS, FALCONS GIGS

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell has withdrawn his name for consideration for head-coaching vacancies in Baltimore and Atlanta.

Hmmmmm.

Schefter speculates that the move means either that Caldwell knows that head coach Tony Dungy is leaving (and that Caldwell is getting the job), or that Caldwell has been promised the job whenever Dungy goes.

We strongly believe that it's the former.

DUNGY REPORT MAKES WAVES

Colts coach (for now) Tony Dungy told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that Dungy has not yet stepped down.

"Believe it or not, I'm going to go through the process just like I said I would," Dungy said. "[Owner] Jim Irsay and I, along with [team president] Bill Polian, have have been talking about this for the last couple of days in Indianapolis. Jim wants me to open the new stadium. I'm not opposed to it, my wife it not opposed to it. I'm going to go through this process to make sure that I should do it."

That's fine, but we stand by our report: Dungy will step down, and assistant head coach Jim Caldwell will take over.

We're not just jumping to a conclusion based on the tea leaves, which are screaming that Dungy will indeed call it quits after six seasons with the Colts. Though we can't compromise our source(s) on this one, there are more folks involved in this story than Dungy.

Just as the news that the Dolphins hired Tony Sparano apparently got out after other candidates for the job were told that Sparano would be hired, it's entirely possible (and we're speaking hypothetically on this one) that Dungy's status is now an open book in league circles because of things that not Dungy but Caldwell is saying.

Caldwell is (or, perhaps more accurately, was) a candidate for the head-coaching vacancies in Atlanta, Baltimore, and Washington.

If (when) Dungy goes, it will cap a successful 12-year run in which he compiled a record of 136-74.

Caldwell was the head coach at Wake Forest from 1993 through 2000. He joined the Bucs in 2001 and jumped to the Colts in 2002 with Dungy.

P.S. Though Mort's report contradicts our, we appreciate the fact that Mort and ESPN actually referred to us by name, both on ESPN.com and on SportsCenter.

I'm glad he finally got his coaching "ring" last season. For a guy whose brilliance is easily evidenced by the impact he's had on the game (particularly his defensive schemes) - he's amazingly low-key and unassuming. He's going to be one tough act to follow if this true.
