Last week, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made reference to opportunities that may arise next week when discussing his coaching staff. Well, next week is here. Some insist that Jones was referring not t...

Such a clueless post.

Did you catch the attempt to argue why Payton would leave NO even though Brees has another year at least there?

Right... neither did I.

Clueless.

Very doubtful unless Jerry is finally prepared to admit he couldn’t build a championship team without a proven HC and let them steal his thunder like Jimmy did.

You really should read the article first ..

From the article ..

It’s next week. And Payton is available. If, of course, the Saints are willing to part with Payton. And if, of course, the Cowboys are willing to compensate the Saints. And if, of course, the Cowboys are willing to compensate Payton. And if, of course, the Cowboys are willing to absorb the scrutiny and the fine that would flow from blatant defiance of the spirit or letter of the Rooney Rule.

Teams can "trade" coaches if the coaches agree to it and they can receive compensation in return for doing so. There have been many instances of this happening in the past.

Maybe it's just me, but it's pretty hard to imagine Payton interested in being traded... at least right now, when he's gotten so close to a SB that he can taste it, and knowing he has one more year (at least) to coach a sure-fire HoF QB, as opposed to being sent farther down the proverbial hill to start with a young QB who, though somewhat accomplished, is not yet in Drew Brees' league by anyone's analysis... and unlike player trades, it seems fairly requisite that a coach involved in a trade is enthusiastic about the idea.

We might as well be talking about bringing Jimmy back, imo... it's just not a reasonable conversation.

Not impossible to happen. But not reasonable to anticipate might happen.

If Payton's contract has a stipulations about him leaving if an ownership change was made (one was, since the owner died), then he could void it if he wished. That would eliminate having to compensate the Saints...but it would lead to a lot of bad blood.

I don't see it happening. Why would Payton leave somewhere where he has control to come work for a control freak of an owner?

Uh, I can't remember it happening but once. That being said, why would Payton agree to it, he has as close to a job for life as what you can get in the NFL, (almost God like reverence from fans here in Louisiana... they would burn down the superdome) plus he has full control there! A little something every good coach seems to want these days. Why would he be remotly interested in coming to Dallas and having Jerry's head firmly planted up his a$% and Dak as his QB?

not for this year, but the following. Garrett and maybe Dak are having a prove it year, and if they fail, Jerry can bring in Payton for the 2020 draft. Well that would be the logical way about things, so who knows with Jerry >.>
