Ken Hamlin chimes in on the Cowboys' situation
Spoke with Cowboys FS Ken Hamlin last night and am supposed to get C Andre Gurode on the horn tomorrow (when I am on the road, of course), and I asked Hamlin about all the good stuff going on in Dallas these days. For the most part, he was a good company man, carefully speaking about the troublesome times.
Hamlin littered in some typical athlete jargon, but I have tried to spare you of a lot of that. Mostly, though he was pretty honest but cautiously optimistic about his team’s chances. Here's a little bit of our chat:
EE: I know you’re regarded as a leader on that defense. Considering everything you guys have been through there the past couple of weeks, what are you trying to do to keep guys focused and ready to keep playing?
KH: I think the guys are already focused. We are not looking at stuff that’s off the field. We’re trying to improve off the field. And we’re looking at making sure we are communicating more and that at practice we’re working harder and get the looks we’re going to get in games. So we’re getting back to the basics and playing football.
EE: Roy Williams -- the safety, that is -- will he be ready Sunday?
KH: He’s looking good. I know he’s anxious to get back. Him getting back would be a good addition for us. Like I always say, when guys are down, there’s an opportunity for guys to show their skills and be another person who is accountable on this defense.
EE: Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick will be playing a big role the nextfwe weeks and beyond with Terence Newman injured and Adam Jones suspended. Tell me how they will do.
KH: With Mike Jenkins, the speed that he has, he’s really good in man-to-man coverage. He does a good job of playing his guy, having instinct. Orlando, he does a good job of playing the slot receivers. You put him in there as a rookie and playing against some of the top guys, where you’re basically man to man, he does a great job. They are growing fast and maturing fast, and it’s going to help us out a lot more down the line.
EE: How would you assess your own play right now?
H: I am doing pretty well. I definitely am looking to get my hands more on the ball. Those opportunities hopefully will come a little more. I doubt teams are throwing away from me, but they’re doing different things with their offensive schemes. I am just trying to be sound: trying tackle better, do little things, communicate better and play better. I think I am doing OK.
EE: Is there frustration with the team? Do you feel like you should be 6-0, 5-1 at worst?
KH: We definitely can’t look at it as what we could have been. We’re not doing that. Things happen, and we have to learn from them. You can’t dwell on the past. At the same time, you can learn from it. And that’s what we’re looking to do. We’re looking to learn from our mistakes, but you can’t cry over spilled milk. It happens. You definitely don’t want to lose, but you learn from it and hopefully makes you better down the line. You don’t like losing, but we’re not frustrated from the whole situation or how it has happened.
We'll see Sunday. It promises to be a very interesting game, and I'll be there in St. Louis to give you the hottest live-blogging action on the Net!
