Rumors suggest Broncos are trying to trade Cutler

By PFW staff
Feb. 28, 2009

Rumors suggesting that the Broncos are trying to trade QB Jay Cutler have been circulating Saturday.

NFL Network reported that the Buccaneers and Lions had been trying to acquire Matt Cassel for the purpose of sending Cassel to Denver in return for Cutler. When those deals failed to materialize, Cassel was traded to the Chiefs.

Denver TV station CBS4 reported that the Broncos are still trying to trade Cutler and quoted the quarterback as saying he is aware of the talks.

“I've heard the rumors,” Cutler told CBS4. “I know what they're trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I’d love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it.”

CBS4 also said that a three-way deal involving the Broncos, Bucs and Patriots was near completion Friday but never was consummated.

Broncos GM Brian Xanders told CBS4 that the team is not trying to deal Cutler. Josh McDaniels, Denver’s new head coach, mentored Cassel in New England last yea

Josh McDaniels denies that his team wants to trade Jay Cutler or ever wanted to trade Cutler.

"I'm upset. I mean I'm really shocked at this point," Cutler said. He still believes he's on the trade block, but we highly doubt that's true. It appears both Tampa and Detroit tried to acquire Cutler by possibly offering a first-round pick to New England in a three-team deal that would send Matt Cassel to the Broncos. Denver listened, but turned the deals down. What else could they do?

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Jay Cutler is still "not so sure" he'll be back with the Broncos after they shopped him around the league.
New coach Josh McDaniels is playing with fire. Losing the confidence of Cutler -- the most valuable player on Denver's roster -- could haunt the Broncos all offseason. There isn't a quarterback-needy team in the league that wouldn't want him and the Broncos' only other QB under contract is practice squader Darrell Hackney. McDaniels has some explaining to do.

Well, that makes sense. As Warren Buffett says, it's like a woman taking off half her clothes and asking, 'Should I continue?' Even if you're a 90-year-old eunuch, you let 'em finish.

If they trade Cutler it has everything to do with his diabetes, cause as a QB and a leader, he has been very good.

I don't think Cutler is a franchise QB, but that's just my opinion...

He is 25 years old and just threw for 4500+ and 25 TDs (2nd year starting). The guy is a stud. Probably has the strongest arm in the league and is pretty accurate.

NOW he is going to go into a pass happy spread offense like the Patriots have/had. Perfect fit in Denver.

He is one guy I would take over Romo. If I had to..

LOL Mcdaniels sure loves him:rolleyes:

He's the one who started all this..he doesn't want Cutler. He wants Cassel. Jay Cutler hasn't done much in the NFL compared to Romo..at least Romo's been to the playoffs. Cutler is wild and will cost you more games than he'll help.

Romo isn't wild? :laugh2:

Romo and Cutler are the same QB except Romo has better accuracy and Cutler has a stronger arm. And also, Romo is 3 years older.

McDaniels started it???

That's not what he said. According to the reports in Denver, other teams contacted the Broncos about sending Cassel there. The Broncos listened to offers but turned them down.

If McDaniels wanted Cassel instead of Cutler, why would he turn down the offers?

Denver would be stupid to do this or even fathom it.

Cutler is a good QB - I'd wager he'll be a better QB than anyone in the draft or Cassel will ever be.

If I am the Lions I offer the #20 pick and next year's 1st for him right now. Draft Curry #1 overall and Cutler to Calvin Johnson would be building blocks. Grab OL in the 2nd and 3rd.

Mcdaniels and Mangini both of whom learned under Belichek have recently had reports of them not happy with thier qb's.
Maybe it's just a coincidence I think these 2 head coaches have a lot to learn about personnel and how to treat them.
If I was Cutler I would be pissed.
Mangini comes into the Browns and immediately questions the future of Quinn as the qb and then pisses off Shaun Rogers(pro-bowl player).

I cannot believe the idiocy faction that says Cutler is expendable, that he underachieves, that he isn't the backbone of his team.

Cutler, in college, was a stud. Cutler as a second-year QB is a stud. Based on his trajectory, he will be a HOF candidate one day.

The outbursts are something else. People should learn to deal with it. He's a leader and in the NFL upper tier.

Deal with it. And, yes, Romo and Cutler are both good QBs, but I would give up Romo for Cutler in a heartbeat to better the Cowboys.
