Dunn could fit into Cowboys’ plans for one year

The release of RB Warrick Dunn by the Falcons has opened the door for the 33-year-old runner to join a Super Bowl-caliber club as a backup, and the Cowboys certainly would qualify with that. Dunn’s representatives contacted the Cowboys, who appear to be genuinely interested in adding him as a backup to Marion Barber. Of course, there might be bigger fish that the Cowboys are looking at to fill the spot — the Darren McFadden rumors won’t cease until the draft — but Dunn would provide a nice change of pace. He has been overused in recent years, especially given his age, and if he could get a diet of 8-12 touches per game, he might be a very productive back on a per-rep basis. Dunn has said he would like to play one more season before retiring.

Strahan won’t handcuff team with decision, but will he return?

First, Brett Favre. Then Warren Sapp. Heck, even Sean Landetta hung up his cleats this week. Might Michael Strahan be the next big-name player to call it a career? Both team and player have been silent the past few days on the matter, and frankly the Giants aren’t pressing Strahan one way or another. Not that they don’t want him back — it’s just that no matter what happens, the Giants should be in good shape. Linebacker remains an area of need, and with Kawika Mitchell going to Buffalo, that need is compounded. But Mathias Kiwanuka has the flexibility to play down as an end if Strahan retires or up as a linebacker on the strong side, where he was starting to develop before getting hurt last season.

Pursuit of Moss tips Eagles’ hands about need at receiver

Though head coach Andy Reid said he knew that WR Randy Moss would return to New England all along, there clearly was interest — very strong interest — by the Eagles wanting to upgrade at the position. That’s why there has been the connection to Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald and Lions WR Roy Williams, two top receivers who might be on the trade block. No other remaining free-agent wideout comes close to the talent of Moss, Fitzgerald or Williams. That said, a deal appears unlikely. The Cardinals appear committed to work something out, and the Lions have shot down the Williams talk. A wild card in the trade derby might be Bengals WR Chad Johnson, who appears to be trying to talk his way out of Cincinnati, but that is another situation that appears unlikely. The Bengals continue to say that Johnson will be on the team in 2008.

Might the Commanders stay quiet until the draft?

Typically, the Commanders come out hot in free agency and stay cool through the draft, usually relegated to having fewer picks than most teams. In the past five years, the Commanders have had the fewest draft picks of any NFL team. But this year, the opposite could come true. The team has done nothing in free agency, only re-signing QB Todd Collins, as it is handicapped by its own past financial missteps. But with the team owning all of its original draft picks except for their fourth-rounder (which will go to the Broncos for the T.J. Duckett trade from 2006), and more picks possibly coming their way, it’s possible that the team could stay mostly quiet — expect a free-agent receiver to be added at some point — until the draft rolls around. Though we won’t know until the end of the month, the Commanders could gain at least one compensatory pick for losing free agents last offseason, when Derrick Dockery, Duckett and David Patten, plus others, signed with other teams.
