Oglesby — who? — stealing the show at Cowboys camp
The Cowboys have incredible depth and name value at cornerback. There are returning starters Terence Newman, a Pro Bowler, and Anthony Henry, plus newcomers Adam Jones and first-rounder Mike Jenkins. All four have worked with the first-team defense, and what has been a thin spot in the past appears to be a deep and talented position. Add one more name to the list — Evan Oglesby, who was thought to be in a serious numbers crunch at corner with the previously mentioned players, plus Orlando Scandrick and Alan Ball. Oglesby, who barely got a chance to play last season, has been mostly outstanding, consistently earning mention as one of the better players in Oxnard. He has gone head to head with each of the Cowboys’ top wideouts and has fared well, leading the team in interceptions this camp. Scandrick has shown up well, too, especially on special teams, but at this point it would be a surprise if Oglesby didn’t make the team and force the coaches to consider keeping as many as seven cornerbacks on the roster, but certainly six is a strong possibility.

Boss steps forward as Giants put Shockey era behind them
It has been a week since the team dealt TE Jeremy Shockey, and the talk around Giants camp has been that head coach Tom Coughlin helped push the deal along by letting it be known to team officials that Shockey didn’t fit into the team’s plans because his flamboyant style conflicted with Coughlin's coaching approach. And with the Giants winning the Super Bowl — without Shockey on the field — Coughlin’s power with the team is at an all-time high. But the focus has turned to the new starter, Kevin Boss, and all reports on him thus far have been outstanding. He reportedly looks to be in fantastic shape, weighing around 265 pounds, and he has been one of the highlights of camp in terms of catching the ball. The Giants are deep at receiver, but with a number of injuries there, it has allowed Boss to take a prominent role in the passing game during practice and enhance his rapport with QB Eli Manning.

McNabb having outstanding camp for Eagles
An Eagles source said QB Donovan McNabb has had one of his best camps in years, putting on a display of accuracy, command and confidence in leading the Eagles’ first-team offense in practices. Despite the distractions of All-Pro OG Shawn Andrews missing camp, myriad injuries and contract squabbles with RB Brian Westbrook and CB Lito Sheppard, the Eagles have looked relatively strong in practice, and McNabb is leading the way. The source said despite a strong camp by backup QB Kevin Kolb — who leapfrogged veteran A.J. Feeley on the depth chart — there is no way McNabb will forfeit his starting spot unless he gets hurt. And one of the reasons McNabb has looked so sharp is because he was able to put in almost a full offseason’s worth of work without losing time to rehab a significant injury. His arm has been good, but it’s his legs that have helped him get power into his throws, escape the pass rush and move around the pocket and take off running when needed.

Safety picture taking new look with Commanders
The release of FS Stuart Schweigert shouldn’t be a surprise, team sources say, despite the fact that he joined the team with a chance to start. It turns out that Schweigert was a poor fit in the Commanders’ aggressive style of defense, and the coaches just felt more comfortable with LaRon Landry and Reed Doughty starting. Landry, when he gets back on the field, should play most of his snaps at free safety alongside Doughty, who is better closer to the line of scrimmage. There also have been a few surprise performances of note at the position that will help the depth, even without Schweigert around. Rookies Chris Horton (seventh round) and Kareem Moore (sixth round) have played well, but Horton especially has caught the team’s eye. He had an auspicious debut against the Colts in the Hall of Fame game, with two sacks, a recovery of an onside kick and a near interception. Moore has been more of a factor on special teams to date, but he, too, has impressed.
