No, the Cowboys don't appear to be going away

June 20, 1:42 AM · Gordie Jones - Philadelphia Eagles Examiner

When last we left the Dallas Cowboys, they were serving as roadkill for the Eagles, the Birds joyously trouncing their hated rivals 44-6 in the 2008 season finale.

The Eagles, as a result, went to the playoffs – and nearly the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys went home, having seen a season that began with so much hope and hype – remember “Hard Knocks”? – wind up in the dumpster.

Since then, there has been surprisingly little buzz about Dallas, especially in comparison to last year and the year before. Sure, the Cowboys' new stadium has attracted plenty of attention, but the team? Not so much. Now the NFC East focus is on the Birds and the Giants. Now the consensus is that they are the cream of a division that will be its usual rugged self.

But there is plenty of reason to believe that the Cowboys will be more dangerous than ever, not the least of which is the addition-by-subtraction move to rid themselves of Terrell Owens.

The Daily News’ Rich Hofmann noted in his blog Friday this Yahoo Sports story about the move, in which Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones (Jerry’s kid) expresses the opinion that quarterback Tony Romo will be a more effective leader without Owens there to undermine him.

It remains to be seen how the rest of the equation adds up. But there is some reason to believe that Roy Williams will be a better receiver in a non-T.O.-centered offense (as long as Romo and tight end Jason Witten don't have too many secret meetings, of course). That running back Felix Jones, limited to six games as a rookie in ‘08 because of injury, will be a major factor. That the defense can still be a force.

And as a result, there is plenty of reason to believe Dallas will be right where it usually is – in the middle of the division race.

Which might not be what you want to hear. Just wanted to give you an early heads-up.

Yeah we aren't going anywhere. The trash is gone and we have a lot of young players to contend for many years.

I think this writer is wrong. With that butt-whipping the Boys are having to re-examine and redesign themselves. I don't believe for a minute that this team can just start with a clean slate and believe they are even in the top 20 teams of the NFL. They will have to do it the hard way, to convince me, and show me something on the field. Of course, I am a Cowboy fan, and a good start will get my hopes up! Still I am saying the very best this team will do this year is 9-7, but more than likely 1 or 2 wins less. Sure hope, I am wrong, but I have been a fan from at least 62 (can't remember watching them in 60 or 61).

Off topic sort of, but why should the Eagles feel confident going into this coming season?

They were mediocre last year, but got hot at the end. Anyone remember them tying the Bengals?

Sure, they got on a roll at seasons end, but that momentum won't carry over.

Add to that they lost their emotional defensive leader in Brian Dawkins, as well as their General and defensive genius Jim Johnson.

Color me crazy, but I don't fear the Eagles much at all going into this coming season.

I think you'll be surprised this year. I'd wager that this team will be a much better team than what was fielded last year. Whether or not that translates into a better record remains to be seen, but I certainly don't think they're in re-evaluation mode.

It's nice to fly under the radar.

After the last couple of off seasons especially.

No drama suits me just fine.

I am at a lost for all the hype being given to the Giants and eagles this off season. They are both decent teams, no doubt about that.. but say they are the class or head and shoulders above the Cowboys is just stupid. The eagles have lost a lot on defense this off season, westbrook is another year older and he couldn't stay healthy when he was young.. no WR to scare anyone, Mcnabb is a good QB but that only takes you so far. The Giants.. who knows, Eli is Eli,, an average QB that had a great 4 game stretch one season, but average at best other wise,, they have NO WR at all.. and they lost their D Coord, so who knows how their D will look.. I just don't understand all the love these two teams are getting.

Philthy and NY are both good teams and I won't try to take anything away from them. However, anyone who cannot see that our disappointing season had more to do with injuries than anything else is just blind. I expect us to be in the running for the division championship if we have a mostly healthy team.

Too bad for you, it's not how you start, but how you finish, with that said , there is a little thing called confidence, in your team , the coaching staff, and the players to play as a unit of one this season , mainly that means winning in Dec, and Jan as a start, that would equate into winning a playoff game.

But to say this team needs to prove to you as a fan that they can compete is pretty darn immature and babyish.

Chemistry has been a problem with this team since Romo was anointed starting QB, it has nothing to do with talent, this team is loaded with talent, it just needs to learn to play and win together, and with the departure of the headache players, it will happen.

Based on 44-6, I'd say that answering angrily to that prediction is an act of Bravado.

Witten and Choice had a combined 106 yards and our QB looked a bit confused by the rush on that bleak December day when shadows grow long and the bitter edge of winter nips at the gladiators of the frozen tundras everywhere.

If we are healthy, if we can mount a smarter attack, yeah, we'll be in it.
This team is talented. But with Wade there it is purely speculative.

I say the giants walk away with it. Kitna pushes Romo. The Cowboys sneak into the playoffs. The Eagles and McFlabb fall hard on their philty faces.

The Eagles were 9-7 last year and the Giants finished the year almost as bad as the Cowboys. It's ridiculous to assume that both of them will be head and shoulders above Dallas. And as far as your top 20 team comment, take a look around the league. It's you who needs to re-examine things.

Good point.

On another note, does anyone else think it's strange that some people are acting like that 44-6 game is the be-all and end-all? Do people really think that just because that was the last game of the year, it means we're going to play every game like that?
