I have YET to see anyone state the challenges he faces maintaining and/go gaining upper body strength. How is he going to bench press, shoulder press, bicep curl, tricep pulldown, seated rows, lat pull down etc....you need your hands to TRAIN your upper body. Everyone is jumping to will he play.....how can he even TRAIN...to get READY to play?

I think it can be done. He might have to use machines instead of free weights in the beginning. That hand will obviously not be at full grip strength, but he can use straps to help with that.

I think you seriously underestimate how tender that ENTIRE region is. Besides the BURNS....his right thumb is fractured in several places....and his index finger is gone. So you are going to put a strap on a burned, tender, swollen hand with 3 fingers and train to the degree a NFL defensive lineman needs to train to be ready by September?

I'm not saying that he can be ready by game 1, but if he is on pace to be ready to play game 1, then he should be on pace to weight train for a period of time before that.

I think it will be much more difficult to play a game than to weight train.

I remember a year of so ago when Weems dropped the bench press bar due to a broken thumb. He was not practicing during that time but was weight training. He probably should have been using a machine instead of free weights, but he was weight training when he couldn't practice.

I do wonder how it happened. Was he trying to hold a canister that should be on the ground? Normally, you just put them on the ground, light the fuse and retreat. I don't know how his hand got into it. I don't think any handheld fireworks like Roman Candles are powerful enough to do this much damage. It had to be one of the big mortar types to do that much damage.

I think the CB from TB blew his fingers off when a Roman Candle blew up in his hand if the reports were accurate. It probably was one of the bigger ones in his case. As far as JPP, I'm curious to what happened. I'm sure we'll find out eventually.

Wow, I never thought a Roman Candle was that powerful, but I have not used one in many years so maybe they are more powerful now.

Returning, yes.

Returning to what he once was, unlikely IMO.

I think the thumb and the burns are a bigger issue than the finger
The thumb is key to your grip and burns can be complicated to heal
He will return I think but maybe not as fast as he thinks and if he doesn't have a very good recovery from the thumb he may never be the same player
To me his future is all about the thumb, not the finger

Yes I know. But according to recent reports, his people have contacted the Giants and said he would report right away (when the next activity begins that is) and let their doctors look at him if they will agree to guarantee the whole deal, even for games missed. (Hence my Signor Roberto analogy)

If I'm the Giants, I say no deal.

He really has no leverage at all
Either he signs the tag or he doesn't play and since he doesn't play the season doesn't count and he is right back in the same situation next year
At this point he should sign, not worry about the pay and concentrate on his recovery and get back adapt so he has some leverage next year

What an excellent point! I never thought about that but you are right. How the hell is he going to bench press when the bar sits right in the crook of your thumb and you sure as hell can't pull as much weight with a finger missing.

He's the only player that I can say has given Tyron some problems consistently. No way he comes back as the same player

You can play without your index finger. Question is when.

Without knowing what the xrays look like and possibly MR/CT then it is all conjecture. We also, as he said, don't know the extent of the skin and subdermal injuries including the tendons and slips. Intra-articular fractures are problematic at times. If all the fractures are extensive enough then he might even need internal fixation of the bones although it sounds as if that was done externally. Without looking at everything you just can't know much other than this isn't the best thing that ever happened to him.

He needs to gain as much mobility as is possible for his thumb and shouldn't let short term goals interfere with his rehab. JMO about that.

You're a medical professional, aren't you?
