This is the first 5 series i believe. It's all of the first offensive line with Weeden and Romo as well as the first two defensive series. Reason I did it like this is I found I was not being complete in evaluating each play. I would watch the OL and RB for example and then skip over the perimeter blocking or on defense i would disredard the secondary. I found myself coming back over again and again so this forced me to be systematic.

I don't know that I will do more along these lines and return to the player by player analysis but if you are looking for how a particular player did just use the search function on names. i refer to Bryant as Dez some and other pseudonyms especially early but if someone did something I saw as significant it went in there. This method is very time consuming.

Play by play:

Kickoff: Wilber misses a block. Ryan Williams is clueless to the whiff..

Play 1: Inside run to the right. Ngata is a bull as he gets under Martin and stands him up. The push disrupts the run and because Ngata started to get clear extending Martin's arms they called Martin for holding to boot. All the perimeter guys do a good job sustaining blocks ie Escobar and Williams. Williams looks very good in space securing his block. Witten comes off the ball strong and hooks the DE standing him up.

Play 2: Safety makes a great read and comes up from deep to snuff Murray's run to the left for a short loss. Ngata is now shaded playside over Frederick and he fails to make the reach. Ngata is explosive off the line which stretches the play out. Leary is late to help. Martin does reach his block and drives the DE downfield. Witten does a nice job picking up the OLB in space to cut him off the backside. Smith of course reached and secured the edge but when the NT wins there is no cutback.

Play 3: Dez drags across the secondary about 10 yards deep makes the completion turns up field and gains 20 yards. Multiple receivers crossing. Moseley blitzed and Martin does a nice job picking him up. Interior oline excellent pocket for Romo to step into that throw. Both tackles setting nice corners for pass pro.

Play 4: Murray runs right off tackle play is stretched out but not before a 5 yard gain. Martin looks athletic staying low and driving the DE. Fred with the easily cuts off Ngata. Witten does a nice job picking up the S and he and Williams zone off pursuit. Dez doesn't sustain his block on the corner long enough who makes the tackle.

Play 5: Leary pulls and clears out the ILB on an inside run right to the B gap. Martin is a lot better than this DE and stones him. Ngata goes right and Fred just carries him along. Wittens stones Suggs. Witten blocking standing out now. Murray has a nice hole and easily gets the first down before the S can stop him.

Play 6: Incomplete pass on go route from Dez. Ngata gets isolated on Fred gets under him and gets good push. Not good enough though as the rest of the oline easily wins their battles. Both tackles have been good in pass protection. They had Witten on Suggs but he didn't rush. Good effort by the Ravens corner competing with Bryant at the highpoint. Dez is clearly physically superior as corner goes all out and falls hard.

Play 7: Romo and Murray fail to complete the handoff. Ball is scooped and ran back for TD. Don't know what caused that. Free and Martin got decent push on the rightside but I think it was a counter because Leary was in great position on the second level to cutoff pursuit on a run left. Murray appeared to be running right before the fumble. Murray and Romo need to clean that up because the play had a shot.

Play 1: Inside zone. Fred combos with Martin on NT and Fred does a great job securing the block then peeling to take out ILB on second level. Leary is isoed on Ngata and does a nice job steering him away from the hole and riding him upfield. Ngata is a load in there. Smith gets stood up at first by the OLB. Although he quickly recovers and starts to drive its too late and pursuit is able to contain the play. Murray does a nice job reading the blocks and getting 5 yards.

Play 2: Pass play. Suggs is rushing off the left edge. Witten is isoed on the edge. Easily picks him up and slides him downfield. Only push and the oline has a wall 5 yards in front of Romo to work with. Romo has over 5 seconds to throw and finally finds Hanna in the flat with running room and he drops it. Witten is the best blocker on the field for the Cowboys to this point and the blocking has been good.

Play 3: This play epitomizes the growth of Bryant's game. He has already won on the 9 and made a big play dragging across the field. The Ravens blitz the FS and Dez recognizes it and immediately cuts inside into the area vacated by the FS for first down. It was a 2 man front and a zone blitz that sent 2. I love how the protection and the route adjustments work in harmony. This is the play where they called Dez down when the replay showed him maintaining balance. There are going to be many games where Bryant is the best athlete on the field this year.

Play 4: Zone run over the left side. Witten and Williams are supposed to reach blocks from the right side on the second level. Witten gets to the safety again and snuffs him out. Williams reaches and cuts off the OLB even if he shows poor effort sustaining it. At the point of attack, Fred turns the NT outside, Leary pops Ngata nicely and jars him backwards. Martin pulls and traps the DE inside. Smith gets on the ILB and drives him back 5 yards. Clutts seals off the OLB. Murray runs behind Leary off into the secondary where the S and Williams OLB make the tackle 16 yards downfield. Tremendous effort and timing all around. Leary is beasting.

Play 5: Draw play. Suggs isn't fooled. Sets edge and gets push on Smith squeezing the hole and closing to make the tackle when Murray tries to cut outside. Suggs didn't rush and Smith was too sluggish in his reaction. Fred did a nice job getting to the ILB on the second level. Leary didn't get much push but held his block.

Play 6: Outside run. Leary and Playside ILB rushes and Leary picks him up. Dez holds his block outside. Smith seals DE and edge. POA is Witten onto the OLB. Does a good job reaching the block and getting his hands inside. Suggs does a good job getting Witten's hands off him as Murray tries to pass to make the tackle. Nice play by Suggs to limit to 3 yard gain.

Play 7: Third down. Baltimore sends 5 into a screen. Nice timing and Martin, Fred and Witten are blocking downfield. Martin cannot reach a block 15 yards downfield or it would have been a TD. I don't know if it's legal to cut all the way up and out there but a cut is the only way Martin could have slowed the LB down. As it was it was a big gain.

Play 8: Run inside. Martin reaches the NT but Fred doesn't get a hat on anyone on the second level. Leary whiffs on Ngata who forces Murray to change direction The juke owrks but the play is disupted limiting it to a 3 yard gain.

Play 9: Pass. Ngata back at NT and crashes the A gap. Fred helps Martin and they easily stone him and Fred pivots the other way to help Leary should he need it. Leary picks up DE Both tackles pick up hard charging OLB who do a decent job going upfield. Escobar and Beasley run crossing patterns from the strongside. Single high FS is fascinated by these and misses Dez running upfield. Dez runs a go on the weakside and does a nice job coming back to high point the ball as the corner continues upfield. He rolls in for the score.

Nine play drive any run enthusiast had to love. Ngata played DE and they ran it everytime until he moved to back to nose and then they take a shot downfield and complete it. Baltimore does not look talent poor on the front 7. Dumervil, Mosley and Smith are good players. They were without their top 2 corners for much of this so their secondary wasn't impressive. Brooks and Suggs was quiet but Ngata was a game changing force especially early on the first drive. His power and ability to come off the ball low and strike is impressive. Leary didn't get matched up on him until the second drive but i cannot help but be impressed with how Leary handled Ngata. He plowed Martin but I like how the team kept on coming. I can see this unit become methodical in their execution. They are only going to get better and better as they play together.

Holloman Hitchens Heath, and Church fail hard on the kickoff return choking up a TD.

Offensive Drive 3: 2's are in with the first offensive line. Baltimore still

Play 1: Playaction stretch left, roll right and DE to the strongside bites giving up contain. Weeden finds Escobar running across the field behind the LB for 15 yards.

Play 2: Escobar uses his hands well but he does a poor job blocking the Dumervil at the point of attack. Martin gets held up as the DE Canty crashes into him off the snap. Free got no push as Canty dug in. Dunbar didn't have a lot of running room and is limited to 1 yard.

Play 3: Ngata appears gassed in the middle. He's been on the field for 10 straight minutes minus the ST's. Tackles have no issues on edge rush. Dunbar runs underneath into the open field behind Harris's go route for a quick completion and scampers upfield and out of bounds. Weeden does throw a pretty ball.

Play 4: Hanna blocks Dumervil a lot better than Escobar and the play gets outside. Free hooks Ngata and then Martin pulls outside and seals him. Leary pulls outside Martin and leads Dunbar who hides behind him and pushes ahead for an 8 yard gain.

Play 5: Baltimore shows pride and NT Anderson gets off the ball nicely hitting Fred before he sets. Suggs submarines a pulling Leary. ILB Smith reads the play right away and Martin is not quick enough to beat him to the hole. The Ravens were all over that.

Play 6: Third down and Ravens show a 2 man line shortly before the snap and then blitz 3 more. Protection picks it up nicely. Dunbar does a nice job stepping up and picking up a middle blitzing Moseley and Free does a nice job isolated on Dumervil. Weeden makes a quick read finding Williams 1v1 vs these weak corners outside. Throws a nice ball which Williams runs under but CB makes a nice play to slap the ball away. Had Williams high pointed the ball the out come may have been different but that wasn't what Williams went for.

A punt brings the defense onto the field for the first time.

Play 1: Baltimore runs a screen. LG does not impede Coleman at all and Flacco is running for his life. Crawford also sheds the RT who did try to sustain his block. Wilber does a nice job picking up the RB and Flacco chucks the ball at his feet.

Play 2: Mincey uses an inside counter and makes the LT whiff and has a free run at Flacco. Coleman does a good job getting leverage and sheds the LG drawing the RB chip Crawford went to the B gap and was stood up by RT. Hayden ate a double team. Carter is has a hold of a jersey too far downfield. He isn't beat but he doesn't let go in time. It's hard to evaluate pass coverage from a telecast. Will say that they don't swap LB based on formation. Carter is playing like a SAM and carrying the TE upfield. Wilber and Durant step up due to play action but Durant recovers to carry the RB nicely. Wilber just tries to get under something in an intermediate zone.

Play 3: Crawford doesn't get a great jump on the ball but quickly gets upfield as the RT slide steps 3 times setting up. He set up too deep and Crawford does a nice job contacting and then swimming inside. Flacco throws the ball away and Hayden hidden behind a double team does a nice job timing the ball and batting it down. Wilber was trailing the TE up the seam by two steps but Wilcox was in the mmiddle of the field outside the shot. The receiver thrown to and Scandricks cover had thrown him off with a not so subtle shed. Webb had good coverage running stride for stride on a go route. Carter and Durant had no issue pick up the backs in man coverage.

Play 4: Crawford is doing well off the snap getting up into the LG and standing him up. He is a bit late on the shed and ends up making the tackle from behind. Hayden is playing better than last week but he is still getting moved. Durant makes a nice adjustment to fit wide and get in on the tackle. Mincey pinched in and got in on the tackle as well.

Play 5: Third down and were in the nickel. Coleman is playing much better. This time he stacked the LG and shed him with a swim move. Wilber tried to spin inside but he didn't do a good job setting it up and the C was waiting for him. Crawford gets upfield and tries to get inside but the tackle is sticky. Hayden does nothing with single blocking. Carter does a nice job pikcing up a WR running an in route in his zone and bats a poorly thrown ball away. Flacco got rid of the ball quickly when he saw Coleman ditch the LG.

Webb is soft on the punt return. I hate Webb's softness.

Offense 2s with the first oline.

Play 1: Canty keeps Leary at bay with his long arms and flows to the run. Ngata moves to the double team but not quickly and Fred cannot release quickly to take on Mosely who makes the tackle.

Play 2: Baltimore is using a 2 man line with no one on the weakside edge. this seems to confuse Smith as he blocks in on the DL and ILB Smith blitzes wide and gets a good shot on Weeden. Nice adjustment from Baltimore.

Play 3: Pass play. Dumervil gets upfield quickly before Free sets up. Frees punch has little effect. Weeden reads quickly and gets the ball out though. Escobar got in man coverage and beat Mosley on an out route for the first down. Fred got turned around when DL slanted inside. Slowed him down but ended up on the ground. There was a declined flag on the play for touching Beasley.

Play 4: Baltimore does not want to be run on and they are biting on play action. Stretch left roll right and this time an out route from Beasley in the slot is wide open for an easy throw.

Play 5: Newsome traps the CB charging Byrds swing pass inside and Byrd runs out and up the sideline for another first down before the S forces him out of bounds.

Play 6: out of shotgun. Ngata moves from a Martin, Fred double team but not nearly enough. The ILB he is covering is free to meet Dunbar in the B gap for no gain.

Play 7: No pressure on 4 man rush but Weeden is getting the ball out quickly and throws the ball away. Fred stones Ngata's rush with a punch. Canty uses his long arms but cannot go over Leary.

Play 8: Harris with alligator arms on an inroute under a safety. Another quick throw where both ILB rushed the A gaps. Throw should have been caught.

Bailey is good.

Joseph Randle whiffs a tackle on KR.

Defense

Play 1: Counter. Coleman get hooked inside and Selvie overruns it and misses the tackle. Wilcox with a nice stop of Rice in the open field but not before a long run.

Play 2: Selvie hangs tough at the poa on a stretch right. Scandrick forced Rice back inside on the outside and Selvie jumped on him for a short gain. RT could not keep his hands on Selvie who fought his way through to the tackle.

Play 3: Pass. Mincey gets free with the inside swim again. Hayden gets free using a spin move. Coleman looks gassed. Selvie tries shedding inside too allowing Flacco to drift outside. Wilber does a good job picking up the RB and runs with him. Scandrick has WR on outside called for phantom hold. Flacco threw a bad pass.

Play 4: Inside run. Selvie rides the LT in pinching the hole. Hayden gets hooked but does a nice job recovering to anchor making RB cut back where Selvie jumps on him. Selvie is stout on the run defense.

Play 5: playaction run left rollout right. Selvie chases but Scandrick in his short zone and Carter and Durant diagnose quickly and comes back in pursuit and coverage. Scandrick makes a nice openfield tackle for a short gain when Flacco throws underneath.

Play 6: Third down sees a quick throw before guys shed their blocks. WR Smith has position on a comeback on Webb but Webb is able to reach around and get a hand on the ball preventing Smith from securing it. Wilcox closes quickly and knocks the ball out forcing the FG.

At the game, you could really see the play develop. I was shouting, "There it is!" before Romo even threw it. The more the line gives Romo that much time and space, the more damage we'll be able to do with the slower-developing underneath stuff, and the more fascinated that safety will be. Beasley's role can be huge.

Great insight in this whole write-up.

Really liking what we're seeing from Leary and Wittrn as a blocker. Witten is the most complete TE with his elite blocking. I think this O-line has no weak links. Martin looks worth the pick, Smith is Smith, Frederick is much improved, and Leary and Free hold their own as good as the other three.

Great analysis, Fuzz.

Great stuff. Really appreciate your efforts!
