Play Calling on Our 1-Yard-Line

I think we almost gave the game away with the play calling with the ball on our own one yard line after Roy's forced fumble and recovery. A "safe" pass on either first or second down might have given us a chance for the first down, but two sad-looking pushes up the middle followed by the pass attempt to KJ on third and ten from the one gave us little or no chance.

I was hoping to see a play action/quick 5-7 yard slant pass on 1st or 2nd down. But I admit I'm not a master strategist.

Actually, the pass to Witten that was called back hurt as well. We definitely left some points on the field today.

Regarding the post, I too would have liked to see a quick slant or something to that effect but we decided to take a chance running inside our own end zone. I don't think I was breathing at that point.

I could understand them running on first down hoping to get 3 or 4 yards and get us a little working room. The first down run also set up a play action for second down had they decided to use it. But on second down they should have gone with exactly what you were saying...play action on a 5-7 yard slant or a 5 yard out to the TE. The third down play had almost zero chance after getting nothing on first or second.

I can't believe they used that lame slow outside run again from the 1 inch line. I thought for sure it was going to be a safety, that is a horrible horrible play.

We should have went with a QB sneak on 3 straight plays. No handoffs. No pass attempts. Force NY to use their timeouts and gain a couple of yards for McBriar. The second option would be to do the same thing only take an intentional safety on 4th down then punt from the 20.

Hard to second guess, but NY was moving the ball nicely at that last drive. Giving them a Safety may have cost us the game.

I'm happy with the 3 point win. How many games have we LOST by 3 points or less over the years.

But I had a bad feeling about this one ... reminded me of the Skins game. We need to finish off games ... can't be playing lights out for 58 minutes and then leave the backdoor open for an opponent.

No way do you take a safety!

You'd have to punt the ball to the Giants...they score a TD...we lose...bad idea!

Wait a minute to the Safety idea. If we had run the ball three times instead of throwing on third down, I believe the clock would have been down to 45-50 sec. If we had someone run around to take a safety, we would have milked the clock down to 30-35 sec and Giants have no time outs.
Now you punt to Giants 20-30 yd line and make them the ball 70 yds for a TD with 30 sec.....I like my chances. Most of the time, no team can run down the field fast enough to reline and spike or run more plays. We will win with ease if we can imploy that method.

I do see why BP punt instead of taking a safety because if ensures at least a tie. However, passing on third down was a major mistake.

It's funny to criticize the coaching, and the suggest taking a safety, which would have cost us the game.

We should stop back-seat coaching and be glad the coaches have put together a team and game plans that have us at 4-2 and on pace for the playoffs.

I was actually surprised that we didn't take the safety because I didn't figure there was any way McBriar was getting off that punt, and even if he did, I figured the Gints would return it to our 35 or so.
The ironic thing is that...if Roy doesn't cause the fumble and they score the TD, we probably have enough regulation time to drive down and kick a fg.
I guess it all worked out in the end though eh?

The only play I had a real problem with is the one on third down. They called the first two downs to run clock, forcing NY to burn their timeouts. On 3rd and 10, we roll and throw right. The incompletion stops the clock. Great for NY. Saved them their final timeout.

I agree it should have been another run or QB keeper up the middle, But at the time I was not totaly against teh Safety idea. We get a free kick we have forced them to take their final timeout they have to drive teh feild wich we have not let them do all day. In retrospect we are all geniouses, teh safety would have given thema shot at a win in regulation.

You cant take safety in a situation like that. Especially with a D that isnt incapable of giving up big plays at the end of games.

Taking a safety there could have directly lead to losing the game. A safety would be called for if you were up by like 6 at the time where the other team would need a TD to beat you no matter what, anyway. The 2 points mean nothing in a case like that.

I agree. I thought they should make the Giants burn all their timeouts and then take a safety. McBriar can absolutley boom the ball and punting from the 20 yard line after a safety, he could have forced the Giants at least 20 yards further back from where they started that last drive. No timeouts and being further back could have changed the whole dynamics of that last drive. I think it puts the defense in a better position. I was surprised that they didn't take a safety. Bill is a field position guy. Everything worked out in the end. Even my heart started working again.

Why didn't Roy just scoot the ball into the endzone during his recovery of the ball?

If the ball is on the goal line, we should have gotten it on the 20.

Because you risk losing the game if they get the TD. People can argue over this but when your stuck on the 1 there are not a lot of plays you can run.

Because he was too busy fighting the RB for the possesion of the ball. He was not looking to take it to the endzone and the play would have been blown dead anyways
