Following the recent retirement of Josh Brent, there is now an open spot on the Cowboys’s defensive line rotation. With Tyrone Crawford safely entrenched as one of the starters, Terrell McClain, Nick Hayden, Ken Bishop, Davon Coleman, and Chris Whaley are now left vying for snaps. For now, let’s take a look at the former Texas Longhorn, Chris Whaley.
Background
Chris Whaley was a four star athlete recruit coming out of Madisonville High School in Madisonville, Texas. An oversized running back at 6’3″ and 232 lbs., Whaley was heavily recruited and eventually committed to Mack Brown’s Texas Longhorns over the likes of Florida State, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.
While in Austin, Whaley put on weight and moved to defensive end and after continuing to gain weight, Whaley made the switch to defensive tackle. When taking a look at the stat sheet, Whaley is not going pop out by any means. He registered just three sacks during his career at Texas. Unfortunately, an ACL tear ended his senior season, but he would end up signing with the Cowboys after going undrafted in the 2014 Draft. So, what makes Chris Whaley a worthy candidate for a Cowboys roster spot? Let’s take a look.
Positives
Whaley has yet to register any pro snaps because of his ACL injury, so I reverted to two of his collegiate games to see what kind of player he is. Stemming from his running back past, he is a good athlete for the defensive tackle position. In the two games watched (against Iowa State and TCU) Whaley seemed like the quickest defensive lineman on a line consisting of current pros Jackson Jeffcoat and Malcom Brown.
With Malcom Brown in charge of most of the 1 technique duties, Whaley was utilized mostly as a pass-rushing 3 technique defensive tackle and showed the ability to one gap in a 4-3 scheme. Let’s take a look at a great sack Whaley had against TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin in 2013:
