Miles Austin
Cole Beasley
Gavin Escobar
First I want to say that I think Miles Austin is going to have a simply monster year this year. And people are forgetting what he brings to the table, especially when healthy and in good condition. I guess we will call it the Dez effect.
Cole Beasley brings something unique to the slot. He is the best slot player on this team besides Miles Austin who is more of an overall Monster and is just a difficult player to handle on the outside let alone in the slot. Beasley is a difficult player to contain on the inside and I fully expect to see him on some passing downs. I talked about this earlier in the year. The position a lot of these guys play is like the NBA sixth man position.
We have quite a few players that are going to be vying for that sixth man position this year, and their roles aren't all the same. Williams, Escobar, Beasley, Harris. And yes, I put Harris last, because he doesn't bring nearly as much as the other three. He isn't as good as Beasley in the slot, nor is he as good as Williams on the outside. He doesn't create the mismatch that Escobar creates. That being said Hanna is going to play some downs as well. Maybe even at the cost of Escobar's snaps.
Is Gavin Escobar a great blocker? Obviously he isn't. Is he adequate for the position and role he is going to play. Yeah. If you don't understand what I'm talking about please go watch a game from the Patriots last year when they had both their tight ends healthy, or the previous year. Hernandez wasn't asked to block all that much, even when it came to pass protection, he would chip and then run to the flats. People have this traditional expectation of the tight end, and that just isn't what we brought Escobar here to do.
Hanna is still an interesting player, but at some point (and I'm guessing early) Escobar will see a lot more snaps than him. You can do a lot of things with the 2nd tight end. It's not just like having two traditional tight ends on the field. If that was the case you would have just gotten someone like Martellus Bennett.
Does Escobar need to improve as a blocker, absolutely, that can't hurt the offense. Is it that big of a deal right now? No, it isn't. The funny thing is, he isn't nearly as bad as people think already.
We're going to run the ball a lot more this year, but we're going to pass to set up the run. Mark my words in that. Even players like Dunbar, his major role is going to be as a checkdown. But instead of taking 3-4 yards on a check down, we want some playmakers in the offense. We've upgrade our checkdowns (Escobar), and we've upgraded our downfield threats (Williams). The two wideouts are strong, and the slot is also a strength.
If the line protects, you really can't ask for a much better passing game. I expect big things, and that should help open up the run, especially with some misdirection.
