Look, I keep reading about Bledsoe being a journeyman, too old, a retread, overrated, etc etc. The pessimists on this board are all overlooking some key facts and figures....
First of it's ludicrous to say he's the same QB as Vinny Testeverde.Hes a true 'journeyman', but he did have his best season with the Jets 6 years ago (under parcells)....when he was 36 years old. That team was a play away from the superbowl against denver. In fact Brad Johnson won a superbowl a few years ago when he was the about the same age. Rich Gannon was also a 'journeyman' when he led the Raiders to some playoff seasons and a superbowl in his advanced years as well. Actually going back to Denver, Elway didn't win until he was 37 either.
Drew Bledsoe is barely 33......the last time I checked that was still pretty young by NFL QB standards, especially given his durability. Sure he's not going to be here for 10 years. This team is built to win NOW, that is why he's here, along with several other key veterans: Terry Glenn, Aaron Glenn, Ferguson, Keyshawn, Rivera, etc. Also keep in mind had Mo Lewis not injured Bledsoe on a freak play 4 years ago, Bledsoe would have done the same thing NE has and we wouldn't even know who Tom Brady is. And that is a fact.
I'm not expecting this guy to pass for 4500 yards and 35 touchdowns. What I'm expecting is a solid season in a Parcells style offense. Which means a rock solid running game(which we will have with Atrain and JJ), utilizing the tight end efficiently (which we will), and find receivers deep when the situation calls for it.
Also a lot of people keep looking back to the last few years with Buffalo. First off their line is horrible, even Bills fans know that. He set franchise records there in 02', which is crazy when you think about how good the Bills of the early 90's offense was with jim kelly (even though we owned them twice). But after 02' he was stripped of his weapons, and Moulds (who is overrated to begin with) began his decline and was riddled with injuries. But the bottom line is Bledsoe was released by Buffalo because they couldn't afford to keep him, he didn't fit into the teams new offensive scheme, and their GM is merely trying to preserve his lackluster career that is why took gambles with JP Losman and a few other questionable picks in the draft.
We WILL be a playoff team this year, Im not ready to say will knock the eagles off just yet, but a wildcard is definitely in the forseeable future at the least. I'm also going to make a bold statement and say that Witten is going to shatter all single season Tight End records this season with Drew finding him early and often. I can also see Quincy Morgan regaining his form from a few seasons ago in Cleveland, and Patrick Crayton emerging as well. The key though is Terry Glenn and Keyshawn. They have to stay healthy and give this team 1500-2000 yards between them. And if JJ is the real deal this offense might be explosive to say the least.
If Bledsoe puts up these type of numbers we will be at least a 10 win team:
3000-3500 passing yards
20-27 TD's
15-20 INT's
30-35 sacks
Sure the potential for disaster is there, but I doubt it will happen. We are 2 years removed from the playoffs and having a top defense. We have most of the same players here, plus a plethera of better players added to the roster. I expect the defense to come together by midseason and finish in the the top 10-15. But the key will be opportunistic play and creating turnovers.
Stange things happen every year in this league, and it's not unrealistic to say if all the pieces come together for this football we will be playing well into late jan/early feb this season!
