Customers are already being charged for various plans and how long they relatively talk on the phone, but they are also charged for sending and receiving text messages. Is it really a necessary added cost of doing business or does it simply put more money in telephone companies' pockets?

Yes, they should.

Text Messaging is a service that companies provide and they have a right to charge a fee.

They should but they shouldn't be complete dollar-****** over it either.

ATT has their texting scheme all to pinch another dollar out of their customers. $5 for 200 texts or $15 for 1500 texts.

If you fall anywhere in the middle, one plan is either too damn few and the other is too damn many. Basically you're stuck bent over paying for hundreds more texts than you need or paying extra for a few too many used.

They should if the market bears it and shouldn't if it doesn't. That's about all there is to it, there's no moral issue or anything other than that.

YEs, if you REALLY feel the need to text which believe it or not, the world got along without, they have every right to charge what they feel.

Businesses as i am sure you are aware are out to make a profit, except it or move to an island.

"Accept it or move to an island"?

There are simpler methods for anyone to avoid text messaging charges. Why should someone choose to pick up stakes  Sounds complicated.

It should cost less than it does, but when there's collusion among the market, it doesn't really matter.

Is there a way to block your cell phone from receiving text messages?
If not then they do not have a right really to charge you for receiving text messages if there is no way to block them.

I pay for unlimited data, and have to pay for text messages on top of that? Seems pretty stupid if you ask me, but like everything in this country it is just a racket to squeeze every nickel they possibly can out of us.

Exactly. It's not like there's no competition in the cell phone services market. There is and if the market says they can charge for text messages, then more power to them.

On the other hand, in areas like television and internet services where there are huge areas with no more than one choice of either, well, that's a whole different deal and a whole other topic. :D

Unlimited texting really isn't that much when included with certain deals. And as others have said, you can find ways to do it for free.

Just ask your provider about it.

I for one have always been charged a fee. I pay 20$ a mo for unlimited text messaging already plus the internet data plan for my iphone + the minutes.

Its 100$ a month and they want to charge me more?

Who isn't paying for text messages? I want to know.
