Portis finished for the season
December, 8, 2009
By Matt Mosley
The Washington Commanders have placed Pro Bowl running back Clinton Portis on injured reserve and he'll miss the rest of the season because of symptoms from a concussion he suffered Nov. 8 against the Falcons. Coach Jim Zorn and Portis had both held out hope that Portis could return this season, but blurred vision finally forced the Skins' hand.
Even before his injury, Portis' numbers were down this season. He had rushed for 494 yards and one touchdown. And despite his close relationship with owner Dan Snyder, there's a chance that Portis may have played his last down for the Commanders. With a new regime on the way, there's no guarantee that Portis will have a place on this team.
He's had an uneasy relationship with Zorn from the start, but the two had attempted to find common ground. I don't think Portis' concussion is career-threatening but it's certainly had a major impact on his season. I think the Commanders knew it was unlikely that Portis would return this season and that's why you've seen young running backs such as Quinton Ganther and Marcus Mason added to the roster in recent weeks.
"We felt at this juncture in the season, it was best to place Clinton on injured reserve,” Commanders executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said. “After consulting with our medical staff and other specialists, Clinton’s prognosis is good and we expect him to make a full recovery and return to the Commanders."
But depending on what happens after the season, Cerrato might not have a say in Portis' future.
