Position Series: Depth Is Surprisingly Thin At TE Entering Offseason

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/2...depth-surprisingly-thin-te-entering-offseason

...Pressing Matters:

On the surface this doesn’t seem like an area of drastic need. Jason Witten continues to chug along at a Pro Bowl level, as he caught 77 passes for 713 yards and three touchdowns last year. The Cowboys also traded up in last spring’s draft to grab an intriguing talent in Geoff Swaim. Look further, though, and it gets a bit troubling. James Hanna is arguably the best blocking tight end on the team, and he is set to enter free agency in March. Gavin Escobar is still under contract, but he tore his Achilles on Dec. 19 and his availability for 2016 is questionable at best. The Cowboys are just fine at the top of the depth chart, but it’s fair to say their depth is lacking.

2015 Evaluation:

As is the case everywhere else, it becomes slightly harder to judge the position when you consider the loss of Tony Romo for the vast majority of the season. Witten put up solid numbers – especially considering he was lacking consistent production from the quarterback spot. He led the team in receptions, and he was second on the team in yardage, despite only going over 50 receiving yards in six of 16 games. The Cowboys got production from Hanna, though mainly as a blocker in the running game – which has become his role over the course of his four years with the team. Even before his injury, Escobar’s role has to be considered a disappointment for a second-round pick in his third season. He caught just eight passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Swaim was hardly used in his debut season – which is understandable, given his place on the depth chart.

Need More From

If he were healthy, the answer here would obviously be Escobar. The San Diego State star was taken No. 47 overall in 2013 – before Pro Bowlers like Le’Veon Bell, Eddie Lacy, Travis Kelce and Tyrann Mathieu, to name a few. Escobar has a mere 26 receptions for 303 yards through three seasons. Having said all of that, it’s hard to ask more from a guy who has a lengthy rehab in front of him and might be seriously limited next year. That puts a lot of pressure on Swaim. He’s only a seventh-round pick entering his second season, but it’s fair to say he is currently the No. 2 tight end on the depth chart. The Cowboys will likely sign or draft another guy to bolster the position, but they clearly like Swaim or they wouldn’t have traded a sixth-round pick to move up and get him.

At this point in JW's career, he needs to be in as the #2 TE. Blocking and short routes on 3rd & short and goal line situations, the occasional deep route to mix it up.

I feel the offense would function better with another TE as the main passing option.

I don't believe JW is keeping anyone seeing the field. The TEs we drafted are are crappy and busts, it is not like a TE is great caliber and sitting on the bench just because JW doesn't want to come out. When Peyton Manning is benched for better option at QB, I don't think we are playing JW for the sake of playing him. JW is great team player and I don't see him as a selfish player, he does everything the coaches ask him to do and never bothered about stats

I still disagree with this. Witten is an elite blocking TE, and was one of the best receiving TEs for years in this league. He's declining as a receiver, and with his skillset and legendary status here with fans and the organization, it's tough to bench someone like that.

Bennett and and even Fasano went on to have good careers after they left Dallas. It's not like we continue to draft bad players, Bennett is considered by many to be in the top tier of TEs these days.

Witten is certainly holding TEs behind him back. If we surprisingly take a TE like Henry in this year's draft, we have to start cutting Witten's playing time.

Depth is thin everywhere except oline. There's starters that shouldnt even be 3rd stringers.

To Witten's credit (particularly given he's older)...77 catches with what the Cowboys trotted out at QB in Romo's absence (and working with 3 different back up's), is pretty impressive. Dez of course also wasn't on the field for good chunks of the season, which allows more focus on Witten.

I think they'll look to resign Hanna...or possibly another vet that's a solid blocker.

Bennett played to his potential after he left Dallas.

I think it's time we take another tight end in the 2nd round. I hear they're great at keeping the bench warm on the Cowboys sideline.

I don't want to hear a thing about this position! They've over invested with poor returns for years. You want to grab another one? Sign an undrafted free agent!

During the offseason I don't keep up with Cowboys official website, this article is a reminder to me why I do that. It's the same garbage that gets recycled annually. It was a good story the first time I read it. Being "thin at TE" seems to be a preputial thing with the Cowboys and as valid as this may be true now, it seems this idea has always been pushed by the writers at DC.com and yet (thanks to #82) TE has been a position of strength for the team over the past several years but I digress.

Draft a stud blocking TE in the later rounds. Until Witten retires, there is no point spending a high draft pick on a TE; he'll never see the field.

Resign Hanna and make Witten take a cut in pay, or cut him.

I wish I could "like" this post more than once.

Re-signing Hanna is an option but, given the fact JW will retire after Jerry and Garrett are dead and buried, it would make more sense to draft a blocking TE on day three of the draft. They will never cut or demote him.

JW is like Old Yeller. They will have to take him out back and put him out of his misery; he ain't going no wares.

Seriously, 'make him take a pay cut or cut him'?

The guy can't block like he used to and he's not much for run after the catch, but he still runs some of the best and most crisp routes in the league and moves the chains. I agree it's time to get some youth and athleticism behind him, which they may have in Swaim, but cutting Witten is one of the most ridiculous and comical things I have seen posted here this off-season.

The Spurs should have cut Tim Duncan when he started to slow down, right? What's that, they surrounded him with more talent and he won another ring?

If this offensive coaching staff could actually figure out how to run a two tight end offense, Witten could play about half of the downs he does now, stay fresh and be a very good weapon in the passing game still. I put that failure squarely on Jason Garrett's shoulders.

Do you have any idea what his cap number is this year, or how much his salary is this year?
