Positive tests, isolation, uncertainty: MLS' mess shows what other U.S. leagues are in for

Five days before MLS kicks off a league-wide tournament in Orlando, one of its 26 teams, FC Dallas, is on lockdown in hotel rooms. Around half of the other 25 haven’t yet arrived. Some have sat on buses awaiting COVID-19 test results. Others have been hesitant to travel.

That is, if they happen at all.

Florida’s surging case counts dominated headlines. But the virus didn’t penetrate MLS’ bubble from the surrounding community. It came from Dallas. And now from elsewhere. And now there’s no telling how much it has spread." data-reactid="26">At the heart of MLS’ pre-tournament troubles are COVID characteristics that every sport, and every American institution, must confront. Entering the month, Florida’s surging case counts dominated headlines. But the virus didn’t penetrate MLS’ bubble from the surrounding community. It came from Dallas. And now from elsewhere. And now there’s no telling how much it has spread.

Meanwhile, big-time soccer leagues in Germany and the UK are playing games in their regular stadiums. The only thing they don't have are fans in the stands.

So what are we doing wrong here?

A large portion of this country believes this is all a hoax, the numbers are misleading, masks are freedumb infringements, social distancing is government control, and lock downs are draconian. They actively push back against any and all countermeasures because they decided it's all an exaggerated lie. Other cultures dont act this way.

So 6 months into 2020, Germany is below 500 cases per day, the UK is below 900, and the USA is at just under 60,000 per day. But that too is called lies and smoke and mirrors.

This is also why we arent allowed to visit the EU, or Canada, and even Mexico is starting to close borders. And it'll probably keep getting worse until Americans drop this short-sighted entitlement and admit that this is actually a thing that needs to be dealt with and the vast majority of the rest of the world is showing it's possible to deal with it effectively.

Yep to our best knowledge right now, big gatherings don't help the situation. Didnt I make my opinion on that clear?

Very, very well said. Maybe the most sane post I've seen in the Corona Zone thus far.

Americans are doing quite a bit wrong here actually. Can’t go into it here but football should be the least of our worries.
