Free-agent class of 2009 appears mighty impressive

Now the Ravens know what it feels like to run into perennial Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis. The two sides have hit a stalemate on contract talks aimed at a long-term extension.

After 12 seasons in Baltimore, Lewis is heading into the last year of his contract. The two sides have engaged in contract talks, the Ravens have weighed in with their multi-year offer, Lewis has spelled out his asking price, and too much of a gap now exists to make anyone think a deal is anywhere near imminent.

But Baltimore knows Lewis will still play all out without an extension. Lewis knows he’s going to get paid somewhere. And heading into this weekend’s mandatory minicamp in Baltimore, each side is comfortable with where the situation is at.

For now.

But it is an issue that, if unresolved, will garner more attention as the season goes on.

It is a similar story in other cities, where other high-profile players are creeping closer to hitting the free-agent market after the 2008 season. Check out the list of prospective free agents for 2009, though any could be wiped off it with a long-term extension at any time. The list of potential free agents is a highly decorated one. It will garner a record amount of money.

Here is a look at arguably the top 10 players poised for free agency this winter.

Julius Peppers could be an attractive free-agent option for many teams.

1. Julius Peppers, Panthers defensive end –- Coming off a down year, but teams pay premium for pass rushers.

2. Steven Jackson, Rams running back –- Hard to imagine St. Louis parting ways with its most popular player.

3. Tommie Harris, Bears defensive tackle -– Talks on a long-term contract hit a standstill last month.

4. Marion Barber, Cowboys running back –- Last season, one NFC coach said Barber is an elite back in the same class as LaDainian Tomlinson or Adrian Peterson. Now he wants to be paid that way.

5. Chris Snee, Giants guard –- At a time when interior offensive linemen are cashing in, the son-in-law of Giants coach Tom Coughlin is going to cash in.

6. Nnamdi Asomugha, Raiders cornerback –- Oakland plans to franchise him again if he remains unsigned, which is a distinct possibility.

7. Albert Haynesworth, Titans defensive tackle –- Tennessee wouldn’t let Haynesworth leave this offseason, and its stance is unlikely to change.

8. Terrell Owens, Cowboys wide receiver -– At the age of 34, T.O. is performing like he were 24.

9. Will Smith, Saints defensive end -– New Orleans defensive end Charles Grant got his money and Smith intends to do the same.

10. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Bengals wide receiver –- Still waiting for his first big-money deal.

Of course, the list hardly stops there. It goes on and on, like the money that could be spent on some of these players.

The free-agent class of 2009 also is scheduled to include Lions wide receiver Roy Williams, Bills wide receiver Lee Evans, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman, Cowboys safety Ken Hamlin, Falcons linebacker Keith Brooking, Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson, Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby, Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia and Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer.

It stands right now as one of the more attractive free-agent classes in recent memory -- maybe the most attractive. It is rare that so many talented players hit the market. But it could have something to do with the skyrocketing prices now being paid to players.

There still is plenty of time to see the list of free agents reduced, to watch long-term extensions get worked out, or for teams to slap franchise tags on their players if no deal can be reached.

But the early indications are, front offices need to get their checkbooks ready.

If MBIII wants to be considered in the same breath as Tomlinson, he needs to prove it this year, because I don't buythat yet. I think it's a shrewd move not paying him now, because I doubt he lives up to that hype of whatever NFC East coach said that. We're talking a 1500+ yard, 10+ TD season from a guy on a team with a whole lot of offensive weapons... a guy that's never been the focal point of a defense or, let's face it, faced them at their freshest point.

For his size, he's probably the hardest runner in the NFL right now. Whether that translates to the big mulah and another Pro Bowl season, we'll see. Public opinion is obvious high on these guys that bruise their way to their yards and look good doing it (how many people made the Pro Bowl just barely squeaking by 1000 yards and starting just one game?), but we'll see how they view him in the starting slot.

He's earned it, now he has to keep it. I hope we can find a way to re-sign him and somehow extend TO's contract one or two years.

Barber has a lot left to prove.

I'm surprised TNew is not on the top-10 list given the prices for CBs and he could be the best CB to hit FA in many years.

This is not a good time for the Cowboys with several players possibly facing FA next year as mentioned in the article - you can add Canty to that list.

I wonder what will happen if it comes out that 2010 will be an uncapped year.

I'd love for the Boys to take a run at Roy Williams or Lee Evans (assuming they don't get the franchise tag) if we can't swing a deal for a veteran this offseason.

Canty is a very solid player for us and he's improving, but 3-4 DE is not really a high impact position, not to mention there's a limited market for them. Heck, I don't even think we have a real NT on our team, we have like 6 3-4 DE's.

all Lee Evans does is catch 70+ yd TDs....he is one heckuva game breaker. He would actually be the perfect compliment to TO.

This next off-season could change the face of the NFL for multiple years to come. Salaries are going to go through the roof. You thought rookies get paid too much. Wait till' you see the type of money guys like Lee Evans, Julius Peppers, Nnamdi Asomugha and Tommie Harris get.

The reality of life in today's NFL is that you can NOT hold on to all of your good players because someone else is always willing to pay more. The trick is recognizing who to hold on to and who to let go. Every team gets wounded by this process and how well you hold up is based upon the quality of your depth.

Impressive list of talent. Specially when you consider a guy like TNew was left off the list.

Roy Williams is a guy I think we make a hard run at given we don't trade for a vet WR this year...

I like Lee Evans too, but I doubt there's any way Buffalo lets him get away. Buffalo is quietly putting together a lot of talent up there in Canada...

When they did a breakdown of the Cowboys on Total Access, they pretty much went down the list of all the Cowboys who were about to hit FA and who should get paid.

They listed Newman, Hamlin, Barber, and T.O. However, the biggest FA after these guys will be Ware...and Schefter stressed that he would be the Cowboys priority after getting all the other guys taken care of.

We have to win this year. Because I don't think we can hold our team together that much longer.
