I don't think Burnett is the primary backup for either ILB spot anymore.

May be in for a big pay day during or after this season, but he'll have to earn it by proving he's a probowl back and starter another year.
s. bowen
Easy to resign, if we want him.
k. burnett *
EAsy to resign, if we want him.
c. canty **
He'll get a nice payday, but he won't break the bank because no one will want him as a 4-3 DE.
m. columbo **
Not nearly the player or key to the OL that some fans think he is...He'll resign for a lot less than Flozell or we'll let him walk...can't resign all of them.
t. curtis
If he has a good year, he'll be a tough guy to resign...I think he walks for a chance to start.
k. hamlin ***
Perhaps the most important signee, imo...He deserves his money, and there's no way Jerry lets him walk after the pain we suffered through at the position before Hamlin.
a. henry **
Good player, but he won't see another big contract in Dallas at his age...he resigns for starter, not star, money if he's still the starter...but most likely, he walks.
b. johnson *
Who cares?
t. johnson *
Unless he outplays Ratliff at NT, he'll resign because he loves Dallas or he'll walk for starter's money somewhere else...not a key guy to resign.
t. newman ***
Everything depends on Pacman and the rookies...Newman deserves a big contract, but he may have to walk to get what he actually wants...if our 3 new CB's are as good as advertised, not necessarily as good as TNew, then we can afford to let him walk...we can't afford to break the bank on this player and make him the highest paid CB...that kind of money isn't going to really make a significant difference in wins and losses...unless our 3 new CBs all turn out poorly.
e. oglesby
Who cares?
t. owens ***
Unfortunately, he has us by the shorthairs...even at his age, and even if he has a year less stellar than last year, we're going to have to pay him to keep him or give up huge money and picks for a blue chip starter...without T.O., our WR corps looks very very...very below average.

*** - pro-bowl
** - starter
* - primary backup

That's my knee-jerk reaction...I love TNew, but Hamlin and T.O. are the only players that I feel certain we'd lose more games without...How critical TNew getting the humongous payday he wants will depend on what we see this year...we certainly shouldn't even think about resigning him without that knowledge.

I don't think BCarp has what it takes to unseat him.
According to Stewart, Carpenter is the backup to both ILB spots for base packages. Burnett is a sub-packages guy only.

Burnett doesn't have the junk in the trunk to be an every down 3-4 ILB.

Burnett might not have lead in his tail, but care to tell me what exactly Carpenter has, if anything at all?

The most positive thing I have read about him this offseason is that he's our special team's resident funny man.

He has the size, strength, and athleticism to be a 3-down 3-4 ILB. He just has to "get it." I don't know if that will happen, but I'm not sure why I'd expect it not to at some point.

I've said it a thousand times, but since you're asking I'll say it again. I think he just needs to get a lot of in-game snaps to get comfortable. By the end of this rookie season he was finally "getting" the OLB spot. He played too timid at first, as though he was overthinking the position and not reacting. As time went on, he became much more aggressive and played much quicker.

Measurements only take you so far if people got by on measurements alone then Robbert Gallery sp? would be an all-star. Burnett can play flat out he has had very strong games for us.
