I liked this part of the article...

There is power in his punch and shock when he delivers the blow. Doesn’t look uncomfortable at all when the rusher tries to take him up the field. Will kick for width, punch, then sit down. Able to mirror and adjust easily. Played left tackle at Notre Dame and from what I have seen from his work at the Senior Bowl and on tape, that would not be a stretch in the NFL. For the Cowboys, I would project him to play guard initially, then move to right tackle in time. At guard in the Senior Bowl, he received plenty of work against Aaron Donald and fought him to a draw where no guard could handle him during the practices. At the Combine, Martin even referenced what a battle it was to work against Donald and what he gained from that experience. Depending on what direction this draft goes, it would not be hard for me at all to consider him for the 16th selection for this team because of all the traits he

Sound like a sure thing but this team needs defensive help now. Guards are said to be deep this draft so, as I said earlier this off-season, look for one in the 2nd round that can compete for a starting job. Look for defense again in the 3rd.

My hope is for Defensive help however if he is the BPA in an area of need which i think OL is then take him.

I will never complain if we use a first round pick in the trenchs, assuming we already have a QB. If he is BPA and is a big, fat, fast, strong guy, you take him and dont look back.

I'm still saying we need a good OL at some point in the draft. Then again I say that every year.

Yes, I agree. I think, however, that drafting a stud guard/tackle in the 1st would be a luxury the Cowboys cannot afford. They need at least two defensive players that can come in and start on day one. I also think they need to find a guard or tackle -- in the 2nd round preferably -- that can push for a starting job right away.

If Martin is the best player -- hands down with no other defensive talent on the same plateau -- then he should be the pick but it would mean the Cowboys would still be looking for that premier blue-chip prospect to anchor their d-line for years to come.

Martin has done everything possible to max out his ability. His technique and awareness is the best you'll see in a college player and he's spent a lot of time in the weight room; however, he would have the smallest wingspan of any OT in the NFL if he played that position. His wingspan is even smaller than Justin Pugh's (79) vs Martin (76).

His best value is that he will be ready to start day 1; however, this draft is deep with OL several of which have upsides that are as high or higher than Martin's but some of them won't be ready to start on day 1.

Would you like Martin at 16? I'm starting to like it and would add to building a real good OL and young.

No, there is too much OL talent in this draft to take him that high, IMO.

I think the point is that you're not just drafting a guard. You're drafting a guy that can start immediately at guard and then move to RT when Free walks. If you look at it as drafting a Tackle, 16 makes more sense. I don't think id want to take just a guard at 16 either.

Use him as a G, he can continue to bulk up and become a road grader, as well as the ability to pull. If you get in a pinch you can move him outside and not lose much.

Agreed.

I don't know anything about short arms (xwalker's point) but if the guy can be a starting tackle then I'm good with him at 16.

I like Martin as a pick. Realistically, we can burn first round picks on the DL, but this defense is just never going to be dominant. It needs to be serviceable. A middle of the pack D is good enough if the O is sharp. Having another great OL player makes that happen.

he is projected as a G-T. Having him play G for a year or two then slide over would be huge for us

We are too bad at finding OL talent later in the draft to not take him if other guys like Donald are gone.

In fact I've heard the opposite.

After the first 3-4 the talent at guard drops off quite quickly.

If Donald is gone by 16 or the Cowboys get some valid DT help in FA then Martin is a valid option.

Shamelessly taken from the ESPN board. He does have short arms (32 1/4) compared to some of these other T-Rexes.

Now that Callahan and Pollack are the OL coaches I have a better feeling about it. Callahan spent significant time with Frederick prior to the draft last year.

When the Cowboys drafted Arkin, Houck was still the OL coach but Garrett wanted to draft guys to move to a Zone scheme. Houck always coached a man blocking scheme. Even with the Cowboys picking, I think Arkin would have been a UDFA in this draft.
