Since we are firmly married to the Tampa 2, the options are going to be limited.

Are we firmly married to it? It sounds like in the eyes of many this is a foregone conclusion, however we've only run the Tampa-2 for a single season, none of our CBs really excel in off coverage, and our best DL is poised to become a 32 year old unrestricted free agent. DeMarcus Ware was never a great fit for the scheme and none of our safeties will be confused for John Lynch either.

It seems to me we could (and probably should) change schemes.

Kiffin said that they would prefer to play a Seattle style defense. I think the injuries prevented him from trying to play more of that style.

I don't know... I realize we had a **** ton of injuries, but the defensive staff just seemed to lack imagination and creativity on that side of the ball. I suppose you could be right and it was the injuries that kept them from playing a scheme more similar to Seattle. I hope you're right.

If I could wave a wand and have the Cowboys defense play like any team in the league, it would probably be the Seahawks. I absolutely love the way they play defense.

If we could even get close to the way they play, this team would win a whole lot more games.

It is really difficult to do anything beyond the basics when you're constantly shuffling through different players.

We tend to just focus on the decrease in talent when a replacement player is brought in; however, even if the replacement players had equal talent, having no time in the scheme or with the other players is almost a bigger issue than the dropoff in talent. Think about all of the time that goes into training camp and how the new players missed all of that training. Also, the modern NFL rules strictly limit the practice time during the season. Even 20 years ago when Jimmy was here, he said that the biggest adjustment for him was that you really couldn't teach new concepts during the season in the NFL due to the structure of it. He said that you have to implement changes in tne offseason.

If he doesn't get a HC job, Lovie Smith should be the DC. There's no salary cap in coaching. He runs the modern version of Kiffin's defense.

It's possible. HC Jerry has already stated he wants to keep the Tampa 2. One thing is for certain, regardless of who the next DC is, it will be Jerry's hire.

Which is fine, but why go out and hire the architect of the once vaunted Tampa 2 defense if the end product the organization desires couldn't be further from it? Seattle relies on big, physical corners to play man defense and combines elements of both the 3-4 and 4-3 in their front seven. The success or failure of their scheme isn't predicated on having an elite interior passrusher ala Kiffin's defense. A smarter move would have been, and still would be, to go out and hire one of the more senior defensive assistants off of Seattle's staff.

Hiring Kiffin to install Seattle's defense is like asking an electrician to upgrade your plumbing. Then again, it is Jerry we're talking about.
