It is really difficult to do anything beyond the basics when you're constantly shuffling through different players.
We tend to just focus on the decrease in talent when a replacement player is brought in; however, even if the replacement players had equal talent, having no time in the scheme or with the other players is almost a bigger issue than the dropoff in talent. Think about all of the time that goes into training camp and how the new players missed all of that training. Also, the modern NFL rules strictly limit the practice time during the season.
