Praise for Newman

I remember in the Chiefs game Newman let Eddie Kennison go on an out and up for a late touchdown. Newman was punching at the air and seemed to be yelling towards Davis. Well it seems Parcells has just put that one on Davis with this little tidbit....

Parcells also has praised Newman as one of the Cowboys' strongest and best-conditioned athletes. Asked if Newman was robbed of a Pro Bowl bid last year, Parcells said, "Now for whatever reason, he didn't give up a touchdown pass last year during the season. Go find me another one that didn't do it."

I thought it was on Davis too...

Trent Green said he diagnosed it as a Cover 2.... Newman was supposed to release the WR to the safety (Davis). Problem was, Davis wasn't back there, bec. he was over the top of Gonzales...

On sunday, they had Cowboys day on NFL Network. They broke it down - Newman released Kennison, obviously to the deep help, and Davis decided to go after Tony, who drew like triple coverage on that play. Davis boned it up, and Newman was obviously ticked.

I saw that too and it sure seems that BP has TNew in held high regard. Clearly TNew last year completed the big leap from college to pros with honors and he has got better each year. Don't think many CB in the NFL can play as well as he can.

Do the Cowboys have him tied up long term yet or is this going to cost a fortune?

Yeah, I remember Newman 'throwing' a punch in air, obviously displeased with Davis/Kennison scoring.

Who was the MLB who was underneath Gonzales on that play?

I spent a lot of time wondering last year how much better that Roy and Newman could be if they weren't always looking over their shoulder, hoping that Keith was in position?

As is, Newman and Roy are awfully good.

Davis came up on the play instead of staying back or even dropping deeper. The linebackers covered the underneath route to Gonzales. Davis needed to stay deep in the Cover 2.

It was Bradie James.

I'm not defending Davis - he should have been there - in Cover 2 that's inexcuseable. But, and this is from memory, but IIRC, even on double coverage, had Davis not helped, wouldn't Gonzales have been open? I feel like I remember that we cut off our nose to spite our face - that had Kennison been covered up by Davis, Green would have checked down to Gonzales and still have gotten a nice play.

Like I said - this is just from memory.

And that's why Watkins will be the FS on this team... sooner rather than later.

KC ran a good play against Cover 2. If Davis did his job, KC still may have made a big play, but he still could have prevented a TD.

I completely agree - safety never should leave the deep. Again, I wasn't defending the play - just thinking out loud about how I felt damned if we did and damned if we didn't on that play.

Oh, I know you weren't defending the play. I don't know if it was necessarily damned if we don't though. If you get a chance to look at the play, KC ran the same routes on the other side and Roy played it correctly. That can make a difference. If Trent Green sees Davis stay back in the zone and play equal distance between the inside route the tight end is running and the outside route the receiver is running, then he may hesitate. He may even check down to a back or scramble. There is no way of knowing for sure, but I like the chances when the player does his job as opposed as to when they don't.

In zone coverage, there always are open spots where passes will be completed if the quarterback makes a good throw and the receiver holds on. But if the coverage is played correctly, there won't be any big plays, and any bad passes have a good chance of being intercepted.

If Davis had played it correctly, Green would have had to have made a near-perfect pass to Gonzalez. James was immediately underneath Gonzalez, and Roy and Davis (if he had been in position) would have been on either side of him. Green would have to get the ball over James, and Gonzalez would have had to have held on while being sandwiched by Roy and Davis.

Here's a picture from just as Green starts to throw --

Davis should have mirrored Roy's position on the field -- he should be around the 27-yard line, a little closer to the sideline and facing the line of scrimmage. He would have been able to get to either Gonzalez or Kennison, depending on where Green threw, in time to prevent a touchdown, if not force an incompletion.
