Pre TC Cowboys position groups: Strength, weakness or Question?

What I’m saying is what makes you guys think they aren’t Zeke?
Because they have no emotional ties to this team! What makes you think you aren't better than zeke right now at this moment! If you ask me, your lateral agility isn't quite what it is, but i'd take you over zeke!!

Man….aight I hope the boys ball out for you. Because you guys are setting yourselves up for some heartbreak.

I mean what Zika are we talking about OH State Super Runner carrying his team with a bad quarterback throughout the playoffs with 2 100 yard games like over and over that came into the NFL with back to back 1800 yard scrimmage yards....?

You know how impressive that is and how we know that running backs on this team are not going to be that Zeke there aren't very many of those zekes that come out of college with that kind of resume people don't want to see it but go back and watch OSUZ that's why he was picked 4 overall.

First four years in the nfl also best running back in the nfl derek Kennedy eventually got his carries and took over but I can promise you this when you were as good as he was in college and had all that mileage and then you come in and you were should have been rookie of the year when you put up a 1600 yard year to back up back to back 1800 scrimmage yards and when as a rookie the rushing title and if you weren't suspended in 2017 definitely I know this for a fact he would have been again the rushing title in 2018 again the rushing champion to leave college and then get drafted that high and live up the expectations up until 2019 he was great.

We're talking about 2020 Zeke who got smashed in the knee mid season you know before that I bet you don't remember he was averaging close to five yards per Gary and I bet you don't remember even in 2021 he was also in the first four or five games averaging close to five yards per carry he got hit in the same quad and the same knee he just never was the same..

But at least he continued his career farther than another injured wannabe has been should have been guy and girly yes Girly had all the tools but injuries messed up his career but at least Zeke went out with close to nine thousand yards and a bunch of touchdowns....

If we're talking about 2020 through 2022 zeke here for the Dallas Cowboys shore if you want to try to tell me these backs we have now could be that guy sure maybe one of them could be the 2019 Ezekiel Elliott but both these guys scream of maybe a poor man's Marion Barber being subbed in for a Tony Pollard yes that is possible but none of them are going to be Ezekiel and I know that for a fact...

He was special he just burned out early I mean we saw that with a guy named Gail Sayers who has almost nothing to deserve himself to be in the Hall of Fame but they saw what he should have been able to do had he not got hurt so they put him in the Hall of Fame you know Ezekiel is numbers are better than Terrell Davis's career and yet you try to demean this dude..

You're correct probably should have been brought back but I blame Mike mccarthy for that they literally didn't use Hunter and they didn't use the correct players for short yardage and it made Jerry think they needed a short yardage guy they brought him back hoping that he could just be three yards in a cloud of dust but at the right time get first downs get touchdowns and it didn't workout..

But don't be one of those guys and I mean in quotes one of those guys that demeans Ezekiel Elliott's career...

If if my foot could be anywhere close to Marion Barber it would sets the comp I use he can be that type of tower runner and it being backed up by blue who could be Tony Pollard that'd be great but ain't no one on this team right now Ezekiel Elliott not in his prime not from college that was so stupid and I promise you right now you or anybody in here don't have the agility that he has right now he would truck you..

And then if you can get up and try to challenge him he literally has enough agility to be better than any of you sitting behind your chairs right now so that was a really delusional statement he may not be an NFL player anymore but I can promise you this he's still pretty athletic and he would make you look silly and you shouldn't embarrass yourself in front of your wife and girlfriend I promise you, you wouldn't want to challenge this dude...

Kind of like right now, you see some of these young players want to challenge Terrell Owens, the dude is embarrassing players, he's taken their soul in foot races and cstill has an athletic build that would embarrass you , because he may not be able to play every down in the NFL ,because eventually your body just can't do it anymore, when you talking about just challenging somebody for like 20 minutes to see if he still got anything he would embarrass you I guarantee he's more agile left right forward or back than anybody right now posting in this place....

Guaranteed he's better than anybody in here to say that is one of the strangest things I've ever heard of you would take some dude in here over Ezekiel Ellie if you were picking a pickup team right now to go play in the local high schools field you seriously would take somebody here over Zeke did you're high you need to stop smoking...

EE21 may not be NFL caliber, but he would waste most anybody that's sitting behind a desk right now reading this,

I could promise you that he would waste you, he was so embarrass you, you wouldn't be able to talk for a month... don't underestimate athletes who can't play anymore in their respective leagues, but I can promise you they embarrass you all day every day.

Man….aight I hope the boys ball out for you. Because you guys are setting yourselves up for some heartbreak.
That dude's funny he thinks he'd be challenged somebody like Ezekiel Elliott and a pickup game right now that he wouldn't get his soul taken from him I mean why do these people have these weird ideas of a guy just can't handle the everyday stress of their respective sports that they couldn't make somebody like you and I and especially him want to run and hide somewhere because they were embarrassed so bad ezekiel Elliott would literally destroy you could do three on one right now with this dude in a pickup game in a Zeke Elliott would destroy them.. He acts like guys like Terrell Owens and Ezekiel Elliott who can't play a full time NFL right now in a pickup game wouldn't literally embarrass and take the souls of every anybody in here him saying he would take you over Zeke in a pickup game it's insane...

I guarantee Ezekiel Elliott right now has more lateral agility than either one of us and he could take three of you guys could line up 3 yards from him and then yell go and he would embarrass every single one of you....

Think it's funny how fans think of ex players just because they look washed in the NFL or washed in basketball they literally would destroy you mentally if you tried to challenge them to a game... Definitely has agility lateral agility speed and a lot of physicality that he would literally I mean you would be dumb to play against a pickup game and I don't care if they were all over 40 years old of NFL X players that look washed they would literally destroy a bunch of weekend warriors...

Man….aight I hope the boys ball out for you. Because you guys are setting yourselves up for some heartbreak.
I agree with you they may not be everything everybody's hoping they're going to be but I can see mafah being a poor man's Marion Barber and I can for sure see blue being Tony Pollard and they are still a bunch of hope in there, i'm not trying to be ridiculous with my expectations, these are what I can see in both these players that doesn't mean they'll live up to it but we're not talking about comparing them to Derek Henry or a HOF player..

I'm trying to keep it simple and that's why my expectations are a different comp and as much as we loved Marion Barber I can see Moffa being that type of player and Tony Pollard was definitely better being the change of pace guy than he was the full time guy and I can see that in both these players it doesn't mean that's what they're going to turn out to be but I think that expectations at least tempered a little bit did you get...

How by having a little hope? I never said they're going to break records, be offensive player of the week 7 times this season! I'm just saying it may not be as bad as we think. In the end we just have to wait and see

If it’s not as bad as we think that’s great. I hope it is. Hope a miracle happens. But it’s no different then the Zeke signing last year except we hope they have more in the tank.

When it comes to building a great NFL roster, as the old saying goes, “Hope is not a strategy.” Great NFL GMs are known for planning for “worst case scenarios” so the season isn’t tanked by a couple of injuries at thin positions and not counting too much on rookies, cast offs and getting lucky.

Looking at our 2025 roster post free agency and draft and after a big trade at WR, how much of this team’s success in the 2025 season is tied to “hope” as opposed to solid roster strengths? We need to look at each position group and determine if there’s strength or weakness or even a question mark.

With that in mind here are the position groups and my opinion on whether that group is a strength, weakness or question mark.

OFFENSE
  • WR/TE- after the George Pickens trade, I believe this position has moved from bad to good quickly. The pairing of Cedee Lamb and George Pickens is excellent and takes pressure off a guy like Jalen Tolbert to be something he’s not. TEs look good not great. If Jake Ferguson returns to form and Luke Schoonmaker can develop, it’s not a bad group. STRENGTH
  • RB - The FO went cheap in FA and picked up two guys who were once really good but haven’t shown much in a couple of years. Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders are question marks for sure. The draft gave us two Day 3 RBs in Jaydon Blue and Phillips Mafah. Blue looks like a playmaker but isn’t a guy who will have more than 8-10 touches a game. Mafah is a long shot. WEAKNESS.
  • QB - Dak Prescott enters his 9th year coming off another serious injury after another disappointing playoff performance in 2023. He’s been good in the regular season. Joe Milton was added as a developmental backup with some upside. Because of Dak’s recent injury history I would have to say QUESTION MARK.
  • OL - We lost a HOF G in Zack Martin but drafted a top notch rookie in Tyler Booker. We have an excellent LG in Tyler Smith and a promising C in Cooper Beebe but last yrs first round pick at LT Tyler Guyton has been a disappointment so far. RT Terance Steele has been up and down recovering from knee injury. Has to be QUESTION MARK although it could become a strength depending on how the young guys develop.
DEFENSE
  • Interior DL - weakest position group we have. Osa Odighizhua is a very solid DT and it goes way down from there. Apparently we are counting on bust watch Mazi Smith, former dolphin underachiever Solomon Thomas, 7th rounders Jay Toia and Tommy Akingbesote and a UFL vet Perrin Winfrey. WEAKNESS. Biggest weakness on the team
  • DE/Pass Rush - Micah Parsons is an All Pro, good vet pass rusher Dante Fowler is back, 2nd rd rookie Donovan Ezeiruaku is exciting and speedy vet Sam Williams makes this team deep with pass rushers. STRENGTH
  • LBs - another position group with lots of question marks. Lots of new faces led by FAs Jack Sanborn and Kenneth Murray, Jr who both have some upside but the resumes are not long or decorated. 2nd yr man Marist Liafau will hopefully progress and last year’s best LB DeMarvion Overshown won’t be back until November at best. QUESTION MARK
  • Safeties- Malik Hooker and Donovan Wilson are solid, not great. Israel Mukuamu and Juanyeh Thomas are decent backups who may develop into something better. STRENGTH.
  • CB - A real concern. With recovering knee injuries to Trevon Diggs and rookie Shavon Revell, we start the year with some question marks. Solid Daron Bland will be handling Nickel duties while we hope former Bills CB Khair Elam, and some other prayers like Andrew Booth and Caelon Carson somehow develop quickly. WEAKNESS.
SPECIAL TEAMS
  • K Brandon Aubrey has been the league’s best K two years straight and P Brian Anger is a top 10 punter. KR/PR specialist Kevantae Turpin is also the league’s best. This is the best position group we have. STRENGTH.
POSITION GROUPS IN ORDER - STRENGTH to WEAKNESS
  • STs
  • DEs/Pass rush
  • WRS/TE
  • SAFETIES
The above are all strengths.
__________________
  • OL
  • QB
  • LBs
The above are all are question marks.
_____________________
  • CBs
  • RBs
  • Interior DL
The above are all positions of real weakness.

IMO, the Cowboys as currently constructed are still a few players away from being considered a serious playoff contender. They are too dependent on hope as a strategy. If several young players have breakout seasons, this team can be a lot better. That’s a lot of ifs.
How do you see it?
What should a fan expect from a rookie LT with such thin experience? Yap he was a penalty machine. Nobody questions his traits coachabilty,or effort.
Booker has got stud written all over him.
DT is our biggest weakness. We'll have opportunities to strengthen th position before the season

Offensive line - strength
QB - strength
WR - strength
TE - ?
RB - ?

Defensive end - strength
Defensive tackle - ?
Linebacker - ?
Cornerback - strength
Safety - ?

You can't really say the question marks are strengths or weaknesses (that's why they're question marks), but I'm hopeful we're able to turn them into strengths as the season goes on.

I think we have the right leaders.
Thank you

You had a whole thread about it.

Argued vehemently that the RB room would be fine with Zeke. And Henry wasn’t needed.

Then week 5-6 you made a thread about how this team made a massive mistake not signing Henry.

Then proceeded to say the high draft pick was going to be amazing then proceeded to defend them winning games.

You literally will champion anything and everything this front office does.
Thanks for sharing. What did I say about Quincy Carter and Tony Romo in the training camp of Romo's rookie year? That was a good one.

I have to believe we will be looking at adding some talent at DT and RB before the season starts.

Otherwise we go in to the 2025 season with full on hope and prayers as a strategy at both the fundamental football cornerstones of running and stopping the run.

The players at safety themselves are not bad, and play as a group.
They really do not get beat in the passing game, but are not ball hawks either. The CB's get burnt far more.
Maybe since they aren't getting the INT's like some teams do they get that reputation with some fans. But overall they are not horrible.
Sorry, but IMO they are bad. Hooker is simply invisible and Wilson is a straight out liability in coverage.

Good evaluation Bob! I don't see the Offensive line being any less than avg.
I think the interior DL, LB, RB are major concerns. Good teams will abuse the middle of the defense.

Good list Bob. I would have to say, IMO, the interior DL is our number one weakness. And the sad fact is, it's been our weakness for a few years now. Could this be the year it finally comes together? Stay tuned! lol
QB room.

After Dak..all scrubs.

I pretty much agree with all of this assessment. There are too many question marks for the Cowboys to be considered a contender. Is it reasonable to believe every question mark will turn out a positive? It can happen I supposed, but more likely not.

It is troubling that the same positions of weakness from last year are still considered positions of weakness this year. I know a lot of folks are talking up Jay Toia, but he is a long shot, as is Akingbesote. We are really needing Mazi to show great improvement this year, but I wouldn't count on it.

I think the Cowboys will finish with about the same record they finished with last year give or take 1 or 2 wins, but I also think they will be a better team than last year. Just a tougher schedule.
