With the future QB play shady at best, and the emergence of returners such as Hester, Cribbs, Pac, ect. I believe a punt out of bounds will be a 15 yard penalty from here it went out. Very few punters even utilize the corner punt anymore anyway.

Why take a fun part out of the game?

That Avy fits you perfectly.

Thank you :)

But seriously, why for KO's and not punts?

How lame will it be if Hester rarely gets returns the rest of his career? Put the ball in play and lets go.

Why is a punt dead when the ball stops rolling, but not a kickoff? Not the case in the CFL. The coffin corner kick can be an exciting part of the game also that shouldn't go away.

but in the CFL, you have to give the receiver 5 yards or else it is a no yards penalty which is usually 15 yards.

Decades ago punters were taught how to do coffin corner punts and put it out of bounds inside the 10. This seems to be a lost art. I wonder why so little effort is put into teaching punters how to aim the ball out of bounds?
That totally destroys any return possibility.

As more and more teams just choose to take Hester out of games by doing exactly what you're saying (punt out of bounds), yes, I could see the NFL consider this rule change.

Gay, you say. But this is the same NFL, remember, that likes to make reactionary rule changes. Hester is one of the most marketable, game-changing players, and if he loses that because teams just pooch punt out of bounds, I would not be surprised to see them consider changing something.

Not saying I would like it, though.

what does the future QB play have to do with this. I predict the NFL will do away with the fair catch signal and make punts a live ball.

Fair catch is a safety issue punters would just lob the ball up and send their biggest hitter down the field to knock the ball loose, but can definitely can see the penalty for out of bounds on a punt

Well, punts out of bounds are important and underutilized but taking them away all together can make it harder for a defense to achieve a safety, which is also exciting.

It does make me wonder though, why is it that so many teams would opt to kick the ball in the field of play with the hopes that coverage can keep the ball inside the 5 or that the ball will just come to rest there when the punter could practice angling the ball out of bounds leaving less to chance?

I just can't seem to understand that...
